The Chicago Sky’s tough 2025 WNBA run has sparked a lot of talk, with new players Angel Reese and Hailey Van Lith at the heart of both harsh words and big support.
Hailey Van Lith, who was picked 11th, has seen a lot of online hate about her size, speed, and if she is ready to play in the pro league. This got worse when WNBA star Angel McCoughtry said Van Lith’s big social media fan base might have helped her get picked. McCoughtry said sorry later, saying her words were not fair and not well put.

Lights and shadows for Van Lith
Fans have had a split and often tough take on Hailey Van Lith’s play during the Chicago Sky’s bad 3-9 start to the WNBA year. Some sharp words have been, calling her “too slow and too short to guard anyone,” which shows worries about how she plays on defense.
Some see her good points in scoring but say that the team’s way of play is not helping her do well. They talk about issues like playing with bigs who do not shoot and iffy outside shooting. A few fans even ask if she was ever great, saying she must get better at shooting and making choices.
Yet, not all words have been mean. Some fans say to wait, noting that she is still young and still getting used to the pro game and should get lots of support. There is also been pushback against the bad vibes, with some pointing out that she hass been unfairly picked on since her days moving schools and being on social media made waves.
Unconditional support from Angel Reese
Even with all the talk, Van Lith has had some good moments. She just hit a high score of 16 points in a game they won against the Connecticut Sun. This got her a shout out from her beloved team-mate Angel Reese, who shared the good game she had and said: “Proud of you ROOK“. Reese also got her first triple-double in the same match, showing they both have a lot of skill.
Their strong link is not by chance. They both played together at LSU in the 2023-24 season and are still close. Reese pushed for Van Lith’s pick in the draft, telling the Sky leaders, “If you want a fighter, pick Hailey”. This bond shows on the court, where Reese helps Van Lith, lifting her up even through her tough first year.
But, the Sky’s 3-9 score has the fans feeling antsy. In the last few games, both Reese and Van Lith had trouble keeping steady, with bad passes and low defense being big issues. Head coach Tyler Marsh, in his first year, is calling for calm as the young team grows.
Sky’s new era approaches
The Sky’s new growth leans on young stars like Angel Reese, Van Lith, and another new player, Kamilla Cardoso. Even with clear growing pains, the long-term plan is still set. After Van Lith’s big game, Reese said: “We didn’t get it right the first time. Let’s run it backkkkk“.
It absolutely is a hard spot to be in, but it looks like Van Lith is keeping her head down and trying hard to get better. It also is up in the air if this pair can guide Chicago to a fresh start. But one thing is sure: they are not stepping away from the big stage.
