Alexander Zverev (28) erlebt in Wimbledon ein Debakel. Erstmals seit sechs Jahren scheitert der Weltranglistendritte bereits in der ersten Runde bei einem Grand Slam. Gegen den Franzosen Arthur Rinderknech (29) verliert der Hamburger 6:7 (3:7), 7:6 (10:8), 3:6, 7:6 (7:5), 4:6.
Es ist eine heftige Blamage für die deutsche Nummer 1.
Weil er genauso weiterspielt wie am Montagabend, als die Partie nach zwei Sätzen unterbrochen wurde. Grund war nicht etwa die hereinbrechende Dunkelheit, der Centre Court hat Flutlicht, sondern die mögliche Lärmbelästigung für die Anwohner.
Bei der Fortsetzung am Dienstagnachmittag dasselbe Bild wie am Vorabend. Zverev kommt mit den Aufschlägen der Nummer 72 der Welt nicht klar. Er findet nicht zu seinem Return und muss sich, im Gegensatz zu den ersten beiden Sätzen am Montag, diesmal sogar den Aufschlag abnehmen lassen.
Rinderknech spielt seinen Stiefel stoisch ruhig runter, macht wohl eines der besten Matches seiner Karriere. Zverev dagegen, der am Montag noch solide aufschlug, ließ am Dienstag auch diese Stärke vermissen.
Das frühe Break von Rinderknech im dritten Satz kann der Olympiasieger von 2021 nicht mehr kontern. Im Gegenteil. Er verliert am Ende sogar ein zweites Mal seinen Service und gibt den Durchgang 3:6 ab.

Man merkt, dass Zverev will, aber selbst ein Becker-Hecht reicht nicht. Rinderknech hat stets die bessere Antwort. Als Zverev beim Stand von 2:2 und 3:3 bei Aufschlag des Franzosen jeweils zwei Breakbälle hat, kann er diese nicht nutzen. Das letzte Bisschen fehlt immer!
Erst im Tie Break packt Zverev dann alles aus, was er hat. 2:5 hinten, fehlen Rinderknech noch zwei Punkte zum Sieg. Beim 5:5 haut Zverev dann einen zweiten Aufschlag als ersten raus, mit 219 km/h. Er holt sich den Tie Break 7:5 – einfach irre!

Selbstsicherheit gibt der dramatische und emotionale Satzgewinn, den Zverev mit einem Schrei zelebriert, aber nicht. Schnell verliert er im finalen Durchgang erneut seinen Aufschlag und läuft dem Break hinterher, ohne es aufzuholen.
Schon die Nacht zuvor war verkorkst. Bruder Mischa (37), Experte bei Amazon Prime, spricht von Temperaturen knapp unter 30 Grad im Haus, in dem die Familie wohnt. „Wir haben uns nachts um 2 Uhr auf dem Flur getroffen, weil es so warm war und wir nicht schlafen konnten“, schildert er eine Begegnung mit Bruder Alexander.
Eine Ausrede für die Niederlage wird das sicher nicht sein. Zverev fiel gegen den krassen Außenseiter schlicht zu wenig ein. Nach 4:40 Stunden Gesamt-Spielzeit verwandelt Rinderknech seinen dritten Matchball zum 6:4 und Zverev ist um eine Enttäuschung reicher.
