Kyle Stowers hit three home runs in a five-hit, six-RBI performance against his former team as the Miami Marlins blew past the host Baltimore Orioles 11-1 in the teams’ final game before the All-Star break Sunday afternoon.

Stowers had talked earlier in the series about his close ties to the Orioles, who drafted him and groomed him as he rose through the minor leagues. In the series finale, he provided his power production across the first five innings, racking up three homers and five runs batted in. The three homers tied a Marlins’ franchise single-game record, and he ended the day 5-for-5 with four runs scored.

Otto Lopez also homered for the Marlins, who have won two games in a row and finished a 4-3 road trip that included an early stop in Cincinnati. Liam Hicks posted three hits, Agustin Ramirez added two safeties and scored three times and Jesus Sanchez and Lopez also contributed a pair of hits.

Eury Perez (3-2) pitched seven shutout innings for the victory, winning a decision for the third time in three starts this month. He gave up three hits without a walk and struck out six.

Brandon Young (0-4) took the loss, allowing seven runs, including four homers, in 4 1/3 innings. He was charged with nine hits while striking out four.

Ramon Laureano had a home run in the eighth inning off Calvin Faucher and added a double for Baltimore, which went 3-3 on the homestand.

Stowers homered in the second inning for the game’s first run. His two-run shot in the third pushed the score to 5-0. Lopez made it back-to-back homers by belting his 11th.

The former Oriole’s two-run blast in the fifth marked his 19th home run of the season. Stowers scored his fourth run in the seventh inning after singling in the seventh. He crossed the plate on Dane Myers’ two-out single.

Then in the eighth, the first-time All-Star drove in a run with a single.

The game began following a 95-minute rain delay.

ROCK HILL and NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — Sneakers squeaking, kids hooping, parents hollering and the game's most famous faces fraternizing on the sidelines. It's the time of year when coaches burn the candle at both ends: 8 a.m. games and 10 p.m. dinners. The midsummer recruiting trail is most interesting window on the hoops calendar that most fans don't get to see or really experience. The biggest names in college basketball rub shoulders, literally, sitting next to each other while watching the college stars of tomorrow. College basketball's July live period allows for two four-day sprints for coaches to hit the road and watch prospects play in a variety of tournaments across the country. Last week, I traveled to South Carolina to take in Adidas-sponsored teams in Rock Hill and Nike-backed programs in North Augusta (with a manageable two-hour drive separating the […]

MLB using robo umps in 2025 All-Star Game: How ABS system works and when it could come to regular-season games

Tuesday night's Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Truist Park in suburban Atlanta will feature the automated ball-strike (ABS) system that could be part of the league on a regular basis as soon as next season. The ABS challenge system, in which catchers or hitters may request video reviews of a limited number of ball or strike calls, will be in place for Tuesday night's game.As CBS Sports detailed back when the system was introduced to the majors during spring training, ABS is based on individualized player heights -- not just a generic strike zone that broadcasts tend to employ. The "challenge" aspect, meanwhile, sees the human umpires retain most of the strike-calling. The hitter or catcher signals a challenge by tapping the top of their helmet, and then replay determines the correct call. Each team will be allowed two challenges; if […]
