Ex-DFB-Sportdirektor Matthias Sammer (57/2006 bis 2012) holt zum Rundumschlag aus, zerlegt den deutschen Fußball. Eine knallharte Generalabrechnung.
Zu wenig Persönlichkeit! Zu viel Schönrederei! Keine Identität mehr!

Das größte Problem für Sammer: „Der deutsche Fußball hat seine grundsätzliche Identität und damit wesentliche Stärken verloren. Die Balance zwischen Innovation und Tradition, um unsere Identität zu bewahren, ist uns nicht geglückt. Bewusst provokativ stelle ich mir die Frage: Wofür steht der deutsche Fußball heute eigentlich? Ich kann es nicht erkennen.“
Die Heim-EM 2024 sorgte für viel Euphorie, doch für die DFB-Elf war bereits im Viertelfinale gegen Spanien (1:2 .V.) Schluss. Was den Europameister von 1996 ganz besonders stört: Nach dem Turnier ging man ihm nicht kritisch genug mit dem Ergebnis um.

Sammer: „Das Viertelfinale bei der EM 2024 wurde in der Öffentlichkeit verkauft wie ein Titel. Wir verkaufen also Durchschnitt als außergewöhnlich. Der deutsche Fußball muss wieder lernen, Durchschnitt nicht als Weltklasse zu verkaufen.“
Weiter: „Wir müssen bei unseren Beurteilungen auch differenzieren und kritisch-konstruktiv diskutieren und dürfen Ergebnisse nicht, nur damit es keine Unruhe gibt, künstlich beschönigen. Im Schönreden sind wir noch immer stärker als in der kritischen Analyse.“
So sei die Analyse nach dem Turnier beispielsweise „übertrieben positiv“ ausgefallen. „Es fehlte der Mut, bei unserem Maßstab zu sagen: Entschuldigung, wir sind im eigenen Land im Viertelfinale ausgeschieden, egal gegen wen“, sagt Sammer.
Als positives Beispiel nennt der TV-Experte (Prime Video) Spanien: „De la Fuente jubelt bei einem Tor nicht übertrieben, da findet kein Halligalli statt. Sachlich wird die Aufmerksamkeit sofort wieder auf das Spiel gelenkt. Wir flippen schon nach der Vorrunde aus, sodass ich gar nicht weiß, wo noch eine Steigerung zum Titel sein soll.“

Insgesamt fehlen Sammer im deutschen Fußball Persönlichkeiten, die Lust am Verteidigen und eine generelle Resilienz! „Nicht der Spanier Mikel Merino hat mit seinem tollen Kopfball Deutschland im EM-Viertelfinale besiegt, sondern es lag vielleicht auch daran, dass wir – anders als früher – physisch nicht mehr dominieren“, erklärt Sammer.
Der frühere Sportvorstand der Bayern (2012 bis 2016): „Früher konnten die Gegner kaum analysieren, wieso deutsche Mannschaften nicht zu bezwingen waren. Über Führungsspieler, Hierarchie, Gruppendynamik wird hierzulande zu wenig gesprochen.“
Dann fragt er: „Sind wir im deutschen Fußball noch in der Lage, zu verteidigen, und zwar gemeinsam, wenn es der Spielverlauf verlangt? Ich kann es im Moment nicht erkennen, dass die deutschen Mannschaften über die nötigen Qualitäten und die Stabilität verfügen, wenn es an schlechten Tagen nicht läuft oder die Spielidee nicht aufgeht.“
Insgesamt wolle er aber „nicht von einer Fehlentwicklung sprechen“. Sammer: „Wir müssen unseren Fußball nur neu justieren und Schwerpunkte definieren. Wir brauchen keine flachen Hierarchien mehr, sondern wieder Führungspersönlichkeiten auf und neben dem Platz. Des Weiteren haben die Führungsleute in den Vereinen sowie im Verband die Aufgabe, die Richtung vorzugeben. Manchmal geht es mir zu sehr um persönliche Eitelkeiten.“
