Es war eine der größten Basketball-Sensationen der letzten Jahre. Der Syntainics MBC gewann am 16. Februar in der Stadthalle Weißenfels durch ein 97:87 gegen Bamberg zum ersten Mal in der Vereinsgeschichte den BBL-Pokal. Eine Region war in Aufruhr!
Damals mittendrin: Martin Breunig (33). Bei der Auslosung für die kommende Saison fungierte der 2,03-Meter-Center jetzt als bärtige Losfee!

Der Modus ist auf den ersten Blick unübersichtlich. In der ersten Runde (23./24.9) kamen dieses Jahr die ersten sieben Zweitligisten in den Topf – und dazu die neun BBL-Teams von den Tabellen-Plätzen neun bis 17. Die Top-Acht der BBL greifen dann ab der zweiten Runde (Achtelfinale) in den Wettbewerb ein.
Das Viertelfinale (Paarungen werden neu gelost) und der Termin für das Top-Four-Turnier sind noch nicht festgelegt. Klar ist aber: Die Endrunde steigt zum letzten Mal bei einem der vier Teilnehmer. Ab 2027 soll das Turnier dann fest am neutralen Standort in Düsseldorf etabliert werden.

Besonders brisant in der ersten Runde: das heiße Niedersachsen-Derby zwischen Zweitligist Bremerhaven und den EWE Baskets Oldenburg! Beide Städte liegen nur rund 70 Kilometer voneinander entfernt. Oldenburgs Sportchef Srdjan Klaric: „Das ist ein großartiges Los, bei dem Erinnerungen an tolle Duelle hochkommen. Ein Derby ist ein tolles Event für die Region und wir werden eine großartige Unterstützung im Rücken haben!“
Dazu kommen die Erstliga-Duelle zwischen den Veolia Towers Hamburg und den BMA365 Bamberg Baskets sowie den Frankfurt Skyliners und MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg.
Vergangene Saison schafften die Hakro Merlins Crailsheim in der ersten Runde als einziger Zweitligist gegen ein BBL-Team die Überraschung und schmissen die Rostock Seawolves aus dem Wettbewerb. Jetzt loste ihnen Breunig mit BBL-Aufsteiger Science City Jena einen alten Bekannten aus der ProA zu. Boss Martin Romig: „Wir sind im Angriffs-Modus!“
Ein Kracher wartet dann im Achtelfinale! Denn da gibt es die Play-off-Revanche zwischen Alba Berlin und Vizemeister Ratiopharm Ulm. Und Meister FC Bayern empfängt das Team von NBA-Star Dennis Schröder (31/Sacramento Kings), den Überraschungs-Dritten Löwen Braunschweig.
