At the beginning of April, it was reported that Derek Carr, quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, suffered a shoulder injury that might require surgery and could jeopardize his participation in the 2025 NFL season. However, there have been no further updates on the matter.
After this news about the Saints surfaced, speculation began that New Orleans could be a top candidate to select Shedeur Sanders from the Colorado Buffaloes with the 9th overall pick in the NFL Draft. In fact, betting markets currently list Shedeur as a future Saints player – but it seems the team isn’t fully convinced yet.

The Saints Are Hopeful for Derek Carr’s Return
At a press conference, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis gave a brief statement regarding Derek Carr’s situation.
“He has a shoulder issue,” said Loomis. “We hope to have a resolution and more clarity soon. And when we do, I’ll let you know. For now, I don’t have anything else to say about Derek.”
Loomis also spoke about how the Saints will approach the draft, though he gave no hint as to whether the team plans to draft a quarterback – something that will only be revealed on Thursday in Green Bay.
“I don’t think our approach to the draft is any different from any other year,” said the veteran GM. “We’re looking for as many good players, great players, as we can find. This year, we’re fortunate to have multiple picks in the first four rounds, and that excites us because I believe this draft has depth that can help us strengthen the roster.”
For now, the uncertainty remains about what decision the Saints will make. In 2024, Carr played in 10 games before suffering a fracture in his left hand. Over the season, he totaled 2,145 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions.
The draft will be intriguing in terms of where Shedeur Sanders ends up – but if the Saints pass on him, the quarterback could slip all the way to the second round, which would be a shocking outcome for Shedeur.
