The Kansas City Chiefs made waves during the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft – and not just because of who they picked. By selecting Josh Simmons, a standout tackle from national champion Ohio State, the Chiefs sent a not-so-subtle message to the locker room: stay healthy, or step aside.
It’s not hard to read between the lines. GM Brett Veach didn’t shy away when talking about the state of the offensive line. Speaking to A to Z Sports’ Charles Goldman, Veach stressed that with Patrick Mahomes under center, “you can never have enough of those guys (tackles).” He pointed directly at Jaylon Moore and Jawaan Taylor, both of whom battled injuries during a rocky 2024 campaign.

Taylor missed Week 18 after a knee injury against Houston. Moore, meanwhile, spent time sidelined with a concussion. Their absences forced the Chiefs into tough decisions late in the season – and with Mahomes sacked six times in a Super Bowl LIX loss, protecting their MVP quarterback is now a top priority.
Chiefs shake up the trenches, betting big on Josh Simmons
Enter Simmons. At 6’5″ and 317 pounds, he’s not just a mountain; he’s mobile. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein called him “a fluid mover” who can handle edge speed – exactly the kind of skillset Kansas City desperately needs. Simmons’ journey, from San Diego State to a title run with Ohio State, proved he could adapt fast and win at the highest level.
Head coach Andy Reid made it clear the team did its homework. Speaking with Sports Illustrated’s Dominic Minchella, Reid said the Chiefs met Simmons at the combine, hosted him for a top-30 visit, and followed up with Zoom interviews right up until draft night. “We wanted to make sure he fits what we do,”Reid explained.
The move doesn’t spell immediate doom forMoore or Taylor, but the challenge is clear. In Kansas City, protecting Mahomes isn’t just a job – it’s the job. And Josh Simmons just walked in ready to compete.

The chances of UCLA ever escaping the Bottom 25 this season looked bleak during an 0-4 start that included a pair of losses to Mountain West teams before the firing of coach DeShaun Foster.
