Shedeur Sanders’NFL journey is off to a challenging start. After sliding through the first four rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft, the former Colorado standout finally found a home with the Cleveland Browns. Some analysts see this as the worst-case scenario for the young quarterback, while others believe it might be the best thing that could have happened to him.
Sanders’ draft experience was a rollercoaster. Despite being viewed as a strong first-round prospect, he fell through the cracks until the Browns took him in the fifth round, selecting him 144th overall-just after picking Dillon Gabriel in the third round.
Following the draft, some argued Sanders would have been better off going undrafted, allowing him to negotiate on his own terms with any team. However, ESPN analyst Dan Graziano sees it differently, viewing Cleveland as a legitimate opportunity.
Does Sanders have a real chance?
In a column for ESPN.com, Graziano acknowledged the theory but wasn’t entirely convinced. “If Sanders had been picked by a team such as the Chiefs, Bengals, or Chargers-teams with cemented starting quarterbacks in place-probably I would have agreed with it.”
However, he believes the Browns are giving Sanders an immediate chance to compete for the starting job. “[Deshaun] Watson, who had another surgery on his Achilles tendon, might not play much this season, if at all.”
During the offseason, Cleveland signed veteran Joe Flacco and traded for Kenny Pickett, but Graziano doesn’t see them as major obstacles for Sanders. “Unseating Flacco, Pickett, and Gabriel shouldn’t be an impossible task if Sanders is the pro-ready prospect he believes himself to be,” he asserted.
Shedeur’s moment of truth
Graziano also noted that as the son of Deion Sanders, Shedeur “has not known life as any kind of underdog. It remains to be seen how he’ll handle it, but we’ve seen plenty of quarterbacks (and players at other positions) who have turned their draft fumbles as fuel and motivation.”
With preseason workouts just weeks away, the former Colorado star has his first chance to impress Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski and fight for his place on the team.
