Elias Diaz homered, singled and scored twice to help the San Diego Padres complete a two-game sweep of the visiting San Francisco Giants with a 5-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon.

Fernando Tatis Jr. had three hits and scored a run in the leadoff spot, and Luis Arraez had two hits, a run scored and an RBI for the Padres, who won the series opener 7-4 on Tuesday.

Padres starter Michael King (4-1) allowed one run and three hits over 5 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking one.

Heliot Ramos and Mike Yastrzemski homered for San Francisco.

Giants starter Landen Roupp (2-2) allowed four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four and walked three.

Gavin Sheets walked to lead off the second for the Padres, took second on a groundout and scored on a two-out single to right by Tyler Wade for a 1-0 lead.

Diaz, hitting in the No. 9 spot, led off the third with a high fly to the wall in left. A fan wearing a Giants shirt reached for the ball, but it caromed off his wrist and over the fence. The play was reviewed for fan interference, but the home run counted, giving San Diego a 2-0 lead.

Tatis, Arraez and Manny Machado delivered three straight one-out singles to right in the fifth to make it 3-0. San Diego eventually loaded the bases in the inning and scored again on a swinging bunt by Jose Iglesias to extend the lead to 4-0.

King retired 10 in a row before hitting No. 9 hitter Tyler Fitzgerald with a pitch with one out in the sixth. Yastrzemski then lined a single to center. Machado then snared a one-hopper from Willy Adames at third and threw to second for the force while laying on his back, but King couldn’t escape the inning as Jung Hoo Lee hit a hard grounder off the glove off Arraez at first, scoring a run to cut it to 4-1 and end King’s day.

Jeremiah Estrada entered and struck out Matt Chapman to end the inning.

Arraez tripled in a run in the sixth to extend the lead to 5-1.

Ramos hit a solo shot with one out in the seventh to trim it to 5-2, and Yastrzemski went deep in the eighth to make it 5-3.

Roberto Suarez pitched the ninth for his MLB-leading 12th save.

When Javier Tebas talks about globalization, he doesn’t sugarcoat it.For the president of La Liga, who has turned Spain’s once-sleepy domestic league into a global media brand, exporting Spanish football to the United States has always been the logical next step. He’s finally pulling off what he set in motion seven years ago.AdvertisementOn Dec. 20, Villarreal C.F. will host F.C. Barcelona at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The fixture will be the first official La Liga match to be played outside Spain. It’s a move that’s been criticized by fans and national federations, blocked once by FIFA, fought in court and now finally cleared to go ahead. And if you ask Tebas, all the noise about betraying tradition or undermining domestic competition misses the point entirely.“What this does is bring more fans to watch football, whether they’re residents of that […]
