As the Kansas City Chiefs regroup for another title run in 2025, a familiar face will once again be leading the charge, but not in quite the same way fans are used to.
Future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce confirmed earlier this year he’ll return for a 13th NFL season, putting to rest months of speculation surrounding potential retirement following the Chiefs’ Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia.

Chiefs GM confirms offensive shake-up
Kelce’s announcement on social media back in February, “ITS TIME FOR YEAR 13”, was met with relief by Chiefs Kingdom.
However, the way the team plans to deploy the veteran playmaker going forward may look quite different.
General manager Brett Veach indicated this week that the Chiefs are preparing to gradually shift Kelce’s on-field responsibilities in 2025 as part of a broader offensive adjustment.
“You’ll see Travis have more of an impact. Maybe it’s not in production, but it’s the offense (overall),”Veach said, according to The Kansas City Star.
While Kelce still posted strong numbers in 2024 with 97 catches, his trademark burst and ability to break tackles showed signs of decline at age 35.
That reality isn’t lost on the Chiefs’ front office.
“The numbers won’t be the same,” Veach admitted.
“I mean, you have to acknowledge a certain aspect of that, right?”
But that doesn’t mean Kelce’s value is diminished.
Veach emphasized his leadership, experience, and chemistry with quarterback Patrick Mahomes as central to Kansas City’s evolving game plan.
“When he’s on the field now, he makes us better. And I think that he’s also a guy that makes the people around him better,” Veach explained.
“It’s almost like a little bit of him and Pat (are) a conductor for everybody else.”
The Chiefs are expected to emphasize a more balanced passing attack in 2025, with wide receivers Rashee Rice, Hollywood Brown, and rookie Xavier Worthy all factoring into the mix.
Head coach Andy Reid has also hinted at managing Kelce’s workload more carefully, including limiting practice reps to preserve the veteran’s health.
With over 12,000 career receiving yards and a record-setting postseason résumé, Kelce remains one of the game’s most decorated and trusted weapons.
While the stat sheet might reflect a reduced role, his presence on the field, and in the locker room, will continue to shape Kansas City’s championship ambitions.
