Die Basketball-Zukunft in Rostock ist rosarot. Oder besser: erdbeerrot!
Zu Ostern liefen die Seawolves im Heimspiel gegen die Bamberg Baskets (98:74) überraschend in rosafarbenen Sondertrikots auf. Der Anlass: Hauptsponsor „Karls Erdbeerhof“ (Umsatz 200 Mio. Euro) hat seinen Vertrag frisch bis 2028 verlängert. Dazu wagte Karls-Inhaber Robert Dahl (53) eine süße Wette – und lobte für alle 4150 Fans in der Stadthalle ein Glas Erdbeermarmelade aus, sollten die Bamberger zwei Freiwürfe hintereinander verwerfen. Im zweiten Viertel war es tatsächlich so weit: Routinier Filip Stanic (27) zeigte Nerven. Die Halle tobte.
[–>„Es macht so viel Spaß dieses Jahr“, sagt Seawolves-Sportvorstand Jens Hakanowitz (45). „Wir spüren einen Riesen-Run. Wenn es gut läuft, dann läuft es in allen Bereichen noch mal besser.“
Vergangene Saison hatte Deutschlands größter Basketball-Verein (2500 Spielerpässe) erst am letzten Spieltag den Abstieg verhindert. „Das war kein schönes Erlebnis“, erinnert sich Hakanowitz. Ein Jahr später kämpft der Klub im dritten Erstliga-Jahr um die direkte Teilnahme an den Play-offs. Ein Sieg im Ost-Duell gegen Verfolger Niners Chemnitz am Sonntag (16.30 Uhr, WELT TV) wäre ein Riesen-Schritt. „Die direkte Qualifikation wäre der größte Erfolg unserer Geschichte“, stellt Hakanowitz klar.
Dass an der Ostsee momentan nicht nur die Erdbeerfelder blühen, hat mehrere Ursachen.

Trainer Christian Held (36) wurde durch Przemyslaw Frasunkiewicz (46/Polen) ersetzt. „Aber das wichtigste Learning war, einen Sportdirektor einzustellen“, sagt Hakanowitz. Die Wahl fiel auf Kévin Anstett (33/Frankreich). Hakanowitz: „Wir haben jetzt jemanden, der 24/7 Profi-Sport lebt und der verdrahtet ist wie kein anderer. Er hat ein Riesen-Netzwerk und ist die entscheidende Personalie für die Zusammensetzung dieses Teams.“
In der Mannschaft blieben nur wenige Stützen. Darunter Kapitän Sid-Marlon Theis (32) und Robin Amaize (31).
„Wir haben einfach eine tolle Gruppe von Jungs. Auch junge Leute, die von Anfang sehr gewillt waren mitzuziehen“, schwärmt Theis. Der dienstälteste Rostocker ist seit 2020 bei den Seawolves. „Da hatten Robin und ich schon ganz andere Sachen gesehen.“
Von den Neuen sticht vor allem Bryce Hamilton (24) heraus. Neben dem Feld wirkt der Ami schüchtern und introvertiert, mit dem Ball ist er das genaue Gegenteil – und zählt mit 17 Punkten pro Partie zu den fünf besten Scorern der Liga!
Doch auch Amaize blühte unter Frasunkiewicz auf. Hakanowitz: „Der neue Trainer hat verstanden, wie er ihn nutzen muss, wie er Sachen aus ihm herauskitzelt, hat ihn gefördert und gefordert. Und Robin hat das mit einer Leistungs-Explosion gedankt.“ Der Flügelspieler wurde im Februar zum sogar MVP gewählt, fiel dann aber mit einem Handbruch aus. Inzwischen ist Amaize zurück Training. Sollte er im Saisonendspurt noch mal zurückkehren, könnte das der ganzen Mannschaft einen Zuckerschub geben.
Über den ganzen Platz: Wurf des Jahres endet tragisch!
Zur Wahrheit gehört auch, dass die Rostocker (Etat: 6,34 Mio. Euro/Platz 9) zäh in die Saison starteten. Doch sie schreckten selbst vor unpopulären Maßnahmen nicht zurück, entließen Publikums-Liebling Tyler Nelson (29) und verpflichteten vier Mann nach. Alle schlugen ein. „Da kann man wirklich nur den Hut vor Kevin und Coach ziehen“, lobt Hakanowitz.
Als nach Amaize auch noch die Stützen D‘Shawn Schwartz (26/Brustmuskel) und Dominic Lockhardt (30/Achillessehne) ausfielen, gewann das Team unbeirrt weiter. „Wir sind eine Einheit. Die Grundlage ist das Kollektiv“, beschreibt Kapitän Theis, der im täglichen Training durch harte Arbeit ein Beispiel setzt. „Dadurch sind wir nicht per se abhängig von einem individuellen Spieler. Wir wissen, was wir wollen. Wir sind nicht schüchtern, gehen in die Spiele rein, um sie zu gewinnen. Und wir sind defensiv einfach sehr unangenehm. Das ist etwas, worauf wir uns verlassen können und das hat uns dahin gebracht, wo wir momentan stehen.“

The Cleveland Browns trimmed their quarterback room to four active players following the release of Tyler Huntley, according to Adam Schefter. Cleveland "has been planning to keep its other four" quarterbacks. This comes after Huntley led the Browns on a game-winning drive during the preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams after substituting into the game with in place of Shedeur Sanders.Huntley signed with the Browns at the start of preseason following Kenny Pickett's hamstring injury to ensure Cleveland had enough quarterback options.
