Simone Biles stepped into the spotlight at Churchill Downs on Saturday for a different kind of performance, trading gymnastics leotards for a show-stopping lavender dress and a Kentucky Derby hat. The seven-time Olympic medalist was given the honor of delivering the traditional “Riders up!” call before the start of the 150th Kentucky Derby, a moment that placed her front and center before millions of viewers.
Escorted by local law enforcement and standing confidently before the camera, Biles began her address with a dramatic flair.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, the city of Louisville, the Commonwealth of Kentucky and sports fans from around the world have been waiting for this moment,” Biles said, before raising her voice with energy and concluding: “Riders up!” She then blew a kiss to the camera, completing the ceremonial announcement.
But while her enthusiasm and elegance were on full display, the internet had mixed feelings about her delivery.
Social media reacts with a mix of critique and admiration
Biles‘ short speech quickly became a trending topic on social media, with viewers sharing opinions that ranged from amused to critical.
“It was cringey… she doesn’t normally talk like that. Right? Haha maybe she does IDK,” one viewer posted on X.
Another added: “She looked pretty, but I’m sorry, she sounded ridiculous.”
However, the reaction wasn’t all negative. Many fans praised Biles for her poise and vibrant energy in embracing the Kentucky Derby tradition. Others noted her stunning appearance and supportive presence alongside her family, calling her a positive and glamorous addition to the event.
Biles attended the race with her husband, NFL safety Jonathan Owens, and her mother, Nellie. The trio also took part in a pre-race interview with NBC Sports, where the 27-year-old gymnast was asked the question many fans are dying to know-will she compete in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles?
“I have not decided,” Biles replied. “It is such an honor to compete on home soil with the fans and everything, but as of now I’m just going to take some time off to focus on my mental and physical health and then we’ll see.
“If anything, I’ll definitely be there supporting Team USA but I just don’t know right now if it’s on the floor or in the stands.”
Later footage showed Biles and her mother watching the race together, with Nellie erupting in celebration after correctly backing the winner, Sovereign. The family moment added a warm and relatable layer to the day’s glamour and pageantry.

Liverpool and Newcastle have agreed a British-record transfer for Alexander Isak.Sky Sports News understands Liverpool will pay a fixed fee of £125m for the striker, who is now expected to complete his move to Anfield on Deadline Day.
