Travis Hunter, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner and Jacksonville Jaguars’ top draft pick, has recently found himself at the center of public scrutiny, not for his athletic prowess, but due to his relationship with fiancée Leanna Lenee.
The couple’s journey, from their teenage years to their engagement in February 2023, has been marred by a series of public incidents that have drawn criticism and concern from fans and celebrities alike.
The controversy began at the Heisman Trophy ceremony when Lenee remained seated while Hunter received the award. Although she later explained that she was unsure whether to stand, citing Hunter’s mother’s seated position as a cue, the incident sparked immediate backlash on social media.
Further scrutiny arose from a TikTok video where Lenee admitted that Hunter wasn’t initially her type, explaining that she didn’t respond to his direct messages because he had a girlfriend at the time. This revelation led to questions about the authenticity of their relationship.
Viral videos and online backlash
The situation escalated when videos surfaced showing Lenee dancing with another man at a party, and allegations emerged of her leaving flirtatious comments on NBA star Anthony Edwards’ Instagram post. These incidents intensified the online criticism, prompting Hunter to deactivate his social media accounts in an attempt to shield himself and Lenee from the relentless negativity.
Amidst the growing controversy, rapper Bow Wow publicly advised Hunter to reconsider his relationship with Lenee. In a video message, Bow Wow expressed concern that Lenee’s actions indicated a lack of genuine affection for Hunter, suggesting that she might be interested in his wealth rather than his well-being.
He emphasized that young men, especially those on the brink of financial success, should be cautious of individuals who may exploit their status.
“I wanted him to hear me. I just felt like he reminded me of one of my little homies. I just looked at Travis like brother, I’m not dissing you. I’m just trying to wake you up because I had to be woke up a couple of times, especially these women,” said Bow Bow.
“These women can blind you out here. You’ll be blind just in love and just milking you as*, milking you and when the milk dries, they gone. So it was coming from a good place.”
However, Bow Wow’s intervention was based on misinformation. The alleged comment from Lenee on Edwards’ post was later revealed to be a fake screenshot from a parody account. Despite this, Bow Wow stood by his advice, stating that his intentions were to protect Hunter from potential harm.
Hunter’s response and relationship status
In response to the mounting pressure, Hunter has expressed the emotional toll the situation has taken on him. He described the constant online criticism as “draining” and questioned why he should end his relationship based on public opinion rather than personal experience.
Despite the challenges, Hunter and Lenee remain engaged, with Lenee supporting him during the NFL Draft, even gifting him a solid gold Rolex watch and bracelet as a symbol of their commitment.
