Barry Diller, one of the most influential figures in American media, has publicly come out as gay.
In a personal essay for New York Magazine, Diller offers an unfiltered look at his complex identity and enduring relationship with legendary fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.

Barry Diller breaks silence on sexuality
The 83-year-old former CEO of both Paramount and Fox shared his story ahead of the release of his forthcoming memoir, Who Knew.
Mental Health Awareness Month With SI Swimsuit
In his essay, titled “The Truth About Us, After All These Years,”Diller writes openly about his sexuality and his decades-long bond with von Furstenberg, a woman he calls “the miracle of my life.”
“While there have been a good many men in my life, there has only ever been one woman,” Diller wrote, “and she didn’t come into my life until I was 33 years old.”
The pair first met in 1974 and began a passionate on-and-off relationship that led to their marriage in 2001.
Despite public speculation about the nature of their union, Diller maintains their connection was, and remains, authentic.
“A relationship that began with indifference, then exploded into a romance as natural to us as breathing, surprised us and everyone else,” he shared.
“It really is the miracle of my life.”
Acknowledging that his attraction to men has long been known in private circles, Diller said he never struggled with his identity internally, but rather feared the reaction of others.
“I have never questioned my sexuality’s basic authority over my life,” he explained.
“I was only afraid of the reaction of others.”
He also made it clear that his love for von Furstenberg was not a contradiction.
“Yes, I also liked guys, but that was not a conflict with my love for Diane,” he admitted.
“I can’t explain it to myself or to the world.”
In response to the essay, von Furstenberg offered her own reflection, stating, “The secret of honoring love and life is to never lie,” quoting author Diane Chamberlain.
While Diller did not disclose the current status of their marriage, neither he nor von Furstenberg has indicated any plans to separate.
The businessman concluded his essay with a message of clarity and peace: “We know, our family knows, and our friends know. The rest is blather.”
