Dana White does not announce Topuria’s next opponent… and Makhachev moves up to welterweight!

No official news from the UFC after last night’s event in Montreal, Canada. Belal Muhammad’s (24-4) loss to Jack Della Maddalena (18-2) and the change of welterweight champion suggested that Dana White, the UFC boss, would announce at a press conference the next opponent for Ilia Topuria (16-0). But that was not the case. Dana White did not even appear.

Islam Makhachev (27-1) was present, at least on social media, with the Dagestani announcing his next steps: “It’s time to become double champion”. In the absence of official confirmation from the UFC, he will move up to welterweight. He will fight for the double title with the newly crowned JDM, who accepted the challenge in the octagon to “avenge Volkanovski”

Abdul Carter’s Rookie Season: Sack Predictions & Analysis

Makhachev has seen the green light to move up in weight class as Belal, his friend and training partner on numerous occasions, is no longer champion. Therefore, they do not have to face each other

The situation, therefore, is somewhat clear regarding Ilia Topuria: he will fight Charles Oliveira (35-10) at UFC 317 on June 28 in Las Vegas for the lightweight title… but interim or vacant? The plan was always the latter, that’s what the UFC promised the ‘Matador’… but Makhachev refuses to give it up even moving up to welterweight

Everything points to it becoming crystal clear this Tuesday in the US, in the early hours of Wednesday in Spain, when Dana White, Hunter Campbell and company meet in the UFC’s ‘War Room’ at its headquarters in Las Vegas
