Als Joshua Samanski (23) Anfang April eine WhatsApp-Nachricht von einer unbekannten Nummer bekam, traute er nach dem Öffnen seinen Augen nicht. Der Absender: Leon Draisaitl (29). Der Superstar der Edmonton Oilers gratulierte dem Straubing-Stürmer zum NHL-Wechsel. Im Sommer kommt Samanski zu den Oilers, sein Zweijahresvertrag bringt ihm pro Saison umgerechnet 870 550 Euro ein.

„Ich war völlig perplex und traute mich erst mal nicht, ihm zu antworten“, sagt Samanski. „Er hat mir geschrieben, dass ich mich jederzeit bei ihm melden kann, wenn ich Fragen habe. Das hat mir viel bedeutet.“
Bei der WM in Herning (Dänemark) und Stockholm (Schweden) ist Samanski einer der deutschen Aufsteiger, genauso wie Lukas Kälble (27), Alexander Ehl (25) und Korbinian Geibel (22). Gegen Ungarn (6:1) und Norwegen (5:2) schoss Samanski seine ersten beiden WM-Tore und hatte großen Anteil am guten Turnierstart der deutschen Mannschaft.
[–>Vergangenes Jahr wurde Samanski kurz vor der WM von Bundestrainer Harold Kreis (66) aussortiert. „Die Enttäuschung war groß, aber ich habe das als Motivation gesehen“, sagt er. Zweikampfstark war der 1,90 Meter große Stürmer schon immer, nun ist er auch zum Scorer geworden. Mit 16 Toren und 28 Vorlagen war er in der vergangenen DEL-Saison Topscorer der Straubing Tigers. Das überzeugte auch die Scouts aus Edmonton.
„Ich habe selbst noch nicht so viel von ihm gesehen, habe aber mit meinen Jungs aus der DEL gesprochen“, sagt Draisaitl. „Und jeder sagt, dass er viel Potenzial hat. Ich freue mich sehr, bald einen deutschen Kollegen hier zu haben und werde versuchen, ihm das Leben hier so einfach wie möglich zu machen.“
Auf der Überholspur ist auch Verteidiger Geibel. Dabei verlief der Anfang seiner Eishockeykarriere holprig. Im Alter von vier Jahren bekam er zu Weihnachten Schlittschuhe geschenkt – allerdings zwei linke, da sich der Verkäufer vertan hatte. 18 Jahre später wurde der im bayerischen Germering geborene Geibel erst mit den Eisbären Berlin DEL-Meister und spielt nun seine erste WM. Dort trumpft er erstaunlich selbstbewusst und abgeklärt auf. „Es ist cool, viele Teamkollegen von den Eisbären dabei zu haben. Das hat mir das Einleben leichter gemacht“, sagt Geibel.
Verteidigerkollege Kälble von den Adler Mannheim profitiert in der Nationalmannschaft von den Freiräumen, die er im Klub nicht hat. „Wir haben grünes Licht, als Verteidiger nach vorne zu gehen“, sagt er. „Ich versuche, mich vorn einzubinden und viel zu schießen.“ Mit Erfolg: Gegen Ungarn und Kasachstan (4:1) erzielte er zwei Tore.
Rechtsaußen Ehl blüht bei der WM nach dem Frust des DEL-Abstiegs mit der Düsseldorfer EG auf, schoss gegen Ungarn ein Tor. Mit 1,76 Metern und 76 Kilo ist der gebürtige Landshuter kein Kraftpaket, setzt sich aber trotzdem in den Zweikämpfen durch und lebt von seiner Schnelligkeit und Spielintelligenz. „Ich bin ziemlich giftig im Forecheck“, sagt Ehl, der nächste Saison bei den Adler Mannheim spielt. „In der vierten Reihe mit dem Kasti (Maximilian Kastner; d. Red.) und dem Hagi (Patrick Hager) halten wir das Spiel einfach und sind unangenehm für den Gegner.“
