Premier League gets government concession over regulator financial distribution deal

The government has made a late concession to the Premier League by agreeing to let English football’s new independent regulator impose a compromise financial distribution deal on the game, as opposed to having to pick one of two proposals. With Sir Keir Starmer’s government enjoying a huge majority in the House of Commons, only government-backed amendments to the Football Governance Bill that will create the regulator are likely to be approved. The government has put forward only one real amendment to the bill before Thursday’s deadline for proposals but it is perhaps the most significant change to how the regulator will operate since Labour introduced its version of the bill last year. The most contentious part of the bill relates to the so-called “backstop” mechanism for settling rows between the Premier League and English Football League over money, with the original idea being […]

The 2025 Blue Jays need good stories. Nathan Lukes is providing one

TORONTO — Nathan Lukes almost gave it all up.The outfielder had just finished his sixth minor-league season in November 2021 when his daughter, Remi Lynn, was born. Despite hitting over .300 with the Tampa Bay Rays’ Triple-A squad that year, he was released to minor-league free agency. With a new family and dashed dreams, it was the closest he came to quitting.AdvertisementOn days like Thursday, when Lukes hit a walk-off single in the 12th inning to lift the Toronto Blue Jays over the San Diego Padres, he’s glad he didn’t walk away.Lukes entered 2025 hoping to compete for a bench spot and earn playing time. But his game-winning hit on Thursday pushed the outfielder’s OPS up to .808, the fourth-highest on the team. The Blue Jays, who need unexpected breakouts to elevate out of the American League’s jumbled middle, are […]

What I’m hearing about the Maple Leafs, Brad Treliving’s role and replacing Brendan Shanahan

Can the Oilers rebound after their Game 1 loss? History is on their side

DALLAS – The Edmonton Oilers suffered a dispiriting loss in Game 1 of the Western Conference final on Wednesday, in which they fell apart in the third period, mostly because of their inability to kill penalties. As bad as that 6-3 defeat was to the Dallas Stars, how much does it really matter?“This team’s always responded to these types of situations very well, and I expect the same tomorrow night,” Oilers captain Connor McDavid said on Thursday. “We’ve had disappointments through various different runs, various times in these playoffs, and responded really, really well, and I expect us to do that again.”AdvertisementThe Oilers have grown accustomed dropping Game 1s in recent history and, as McDavid suggests, they also have a solid track record of rebounding.Wednesday’s loss dropped the Oilers’ record to 4-12 in Game 1s in the McDavid-Leon Draisaitl era.
