

Aaron Rodgers has been harshly criticized by NFL media and fans for not signing with a team after his failed stint with the New York Jets. The Pittsburgh Steelers have been the front-runners to sign the veteran QB, but Rodgers has a heartbreaking reason, involving his personal life, for staying away from the NFL.
The 40-year-old quaterback has been in deep contract talks with the Steelers, and both head coach Mike Tomlin and owner Art Rooney II have publicly expressed optimism that he will sign with the Pittsburgh organization. But after the news the future Hall of Fame QB revealed, nothing about his next step seems certain.

During Rodgers’ appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast, he revealed that his decision to delay a return to football is largely rooted in personal circumstances involving family and close friends. “I figured it out over the last year, when I’ve been in the weeds with these people close to me who have cancer,” he shared.

Since leaving the Jets, the veteran QB has faced mounting criticism for prolonging his decision. But after the sad personal news he shared, the four-time MVP made it clear that his life isn’t only about football – he wants to be there for his loved ones and support them through difficult times.
The Steelers haven’t indicated if their is a timeline for Rodgers to sign. But for the time being, veteran backup Mason Rudolph is the No.1 in Pittsburgh’s quaterback room.
