Pollock targets becoming European champion and then Test Lion

Henry Pollock speaks to Sky Sports ahead of Saturday's Champions Cup final in Cardiff, revealing his eyes are fixed on becoming a European champion and then a Test British and Irish Lion.Still aged just 20, the brash but supremely talented back-row has had a remarkable breakout season. He only became a regular starter for Northampton in October, was still playing for the England U20s during the Six Nations and made his senior England debut off the bench against Wales in March - his only cap to date. And yet, has a player so lacking in experience ever been more of a sure thing as far as a British and Irish Lions call-up goes? On Saturday May 3, Pollard faced three of the best back-row players in the world in Dublin in Josh van der Flier, Jack Conan and Caelan Doris as […]

Dodgers begin grueling stretch with soggy marathon win over Mets despite undermanned pitching staff

NEW YORK — On Friday night, the Dodgers emerged victorious, technically speaking. The defending champions outlasted the Mets 7-5 in an ugly, delirious, rain-soaked, 13-inning slopfest. The game started at 7:10 p.m. ET. It ended just before 1 a.m.There will be bleary-eyed ballplayers on Saturday.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementEven though L.A. won the battle, the night that would not end has created something of a conundrum. Ahead of the Dodgers: a grueling month-long stretch, 26 consecutive games against teams with winning records. To commence that imposing slice of the schedule, this club would have loved a simple, painless opening act. One that might have allowed its overtaxed pitching staff a breather. That’s not what happened.Instead, a combo of rain and extra innings forced Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts to use nearly every arm in his already exhausted bullpen. It was a pyrrhic victory of epic proportions. When […]

Oilers ‘punch back’ with strong Game 2 — and with Stuart Skinner back in shutout form

DALLAS — Once is a coincidence; twice is a pattern. And that pattern is starting to look like a good omen for the Edmonton Oilers and their Stanley Cup chances. For the second time in these playoffs, the Oilers followed up a crushing loss with a convincing win. The latest one was Game 2 on Friday, when they beat the Dallas Stars 3-0 to even the Western Conference final at 1-1, with Game 3 on Sunday in Edmonton.Advertisement“That’s the playoffs. You have to be able to punch back,” Oilers winger Zach Hyman said. “We recognize how important each game is, but especially after a loss. You have to come out strong and earn a split, and we were able to do it.”The Oilers’ response came after they dropped the series opener 6-3 on Wednesday, when they allowed five unanswered goals in […]

Why Knicks went away from Karl-Anthony Towns in Game 2 when ‘searching for a win’

NEW YORK — In a crucial, nearly seven-minute stretch of the fourth quarter, with the New York Knicks trailing the Indiana Pacers and desperately needing to score, Karl-Anthony Towns was on the bench.Just a couple of hours before that, the Knicks’ big man was named to the All-NBA third team, voted on by 100 media members who cover the league, for averaging 24.4 points, grabbing a career-high 12.8 rebounds and shooting a career-best 42.0 percent from 3 during the regular season.AdvertisementThough both true, these two pieces of Towns’ Friday evening don’t match. A player that good just shouldn’t be on the bench for that long near the end of such an important game. And yet, there was Towns, a five-time All-Star (including this season), subbing out with nine minutes left and the Knicks trailing by 9 to the Pacers. He did […]
