Sporting KC and manager Peter Vermes have mutually agreed to part ways, bringing to an end the longest tenure as head coach in MLS.
The 58-year-old will also vacate his role as chief soccer officer while Kerry Zavagnin will be Sporting’s interim head coach.
Vermes was appointed sporting director in 2006 and head coach in 2009. He led Sporting to the 2013 MLS Cup as well as three U.S. Open Cup victories in 2012, 2015 and 2017.

However, he leaves with the side bottom of MLS Western Conference, with one point from its first six games of the 2025 season.
Speaking when the announcement was made, Vermes said: “It would be hard to list all of the people I want to thank after 20 seasons in managerial positions at Sporting Kansas City.
“I am thankful to everyone, especially ownership, for giving me the opportunity of being a steward of this club for the past two decades. I wish the club nothing but the best in the future.”
Vermes remains the only person to win the MLS Cup as both a coach and player, having also lifted the trophy in 2000 while playing for the Kansas City Wizards. He was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 2013.

He’s finally pulling off what he set in motion seven years ago.AdvertisementOn Dec. 20, Villarreal C.F. will host F.C. Barcelona at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The fixture will be the first official La Liga match to be played outside Spain. It’s a move that’s been criticized by fans and national federations, blocked once by FIFA, fought in court and now finally cleared to go ahead. And if you ask Tebas, all the noise about betraying tradition or undermining domestic competition misses the point entirely.“What this does is bring more fans to watch football, whether they’re residents of that […]
