Mistrovství světa v hokeji se poprvé uskutečnilo v roce 1920 a od roku 1968 se koná samostatně i během olympijského roku. Nejčastějším pořadatelem světového šampionátu jsou Švédsko, Švýcarsko a Finsko.
V roce 2025 štafetový kolík organizace hokejového svátku přebralo Švédsko s Dánskem, konkrétně města Stockholm a Herning. V příštím roce 2026 pak šampionát uspořádají švýcarská města Curych a Fribourg, do alpské země se mistrovství světa vrátí poprvé od roku 2009.
MS v hokeji 2025
88. ročník mistrovství světa v hokeji byl na programu v termínu od 9. do 25. května 2025. Hostilo jej Švédsko a Dánsko, konkrétně města Stockholm a Herning, a z mistrovského titulu se radují hokejisté USA.
MS v hokeji 2026 – Curych a Fribourg, Švýcarsko
Termín: 15. – 31. května 2026
Švýcaři měli být pořadatelskou zemí již v roce 2020, kvůli pandemii koronaviru byl však šampionát zrušen. Pro turnaj v roce 2026 byli Švýcaři jediní kandidáti na pořadatelství, hrát se bude ve Fribourgu a Curychu, kde se ve zbrusu nové hale bude hrát i o medaile. Nutno připomenout, že se světový šampionát do Švýcarska vrací po dlouhých 17 letech.
MS v hokeji 2027 – Mannheim a Düsseldorf, Německo
Termín: 14. – 30. května 2027
Po 10 letech se v rámci jubilejního 90. ročníku světový šampionát opět navrací do Německa, kde se naposledy představil v roce 2017. A aby kulatých výročí nebylo málo, Německo se mistrovství světa ujme historicky podesáté. Premiéru si odbylo již v roce 1930!
MS v hokeji 2028 – Paříž a Lyon, Francie
Termín: 12. – 28. května 2028
Při světovém šampionátu v Praze roku 2024 potvrdil kongres Mezinárodní hokejové federace IIHF pořadatelství MS 2028 Francii. Ta byla nakonec jediným kandidátem, jelikož Kazachstán svou kandidaturu stáhnul. Pro Francii to bude po letech 1951 a 2017 historicky třetí pořadatelství mistrovství světa.
MS v hokeji 2029 – Bratislava a Košice, Slovensko
Slovensko bylo jediným kandidátem na pořádání šampionátu v roce 2029, přesto musela být jejich volba schválena delegáty během mistrovství světa 2025. Světový šampionát se k naším východním sousedům vrátí po deseti letech, naposledy tam v roce 2019 slavili titul Finové.
