The United States men’s ice hockey team returned to the top of the sport on Sunday by winning its second world title and the first in 92 years, since 1933, by defeating Switzerland in the final of the tournament played in Stockholm.
After regulation time ended in a 0-0 draw, Tage Thompson scored 2:02 into overtime to give the United States a 1-0 victory over Switzerland and the gold medal at the World Championship in Sweden and Denmark, the country’s first since 1933.
The United States wins the ice hockey World Cup again 92 years later!
The United States, which always has the handicap that many of the great NHL stars do not attend this tournament, won the title that year and since then has had to wait to sign the second as since 1950 it did not even play a World Cup final.
In 1960, a year without a World Cup, they won the Olympic title as hosts at the Squaw Valley Games and in 1980 they repeated their triumph in Lake Placid with the famous ‘Miracle on Ice’, when a college team defeated the mighty Soviet Union

The Swiss have been in the gold medal game four times since 2013, and have lost all four finals: twice against Sweden (2013 and 2018), last year against the Czech Republic, and this Sunday against the United States.

The Golden State Valkyries' historic debut season reached new heights on Thursday when they clinched a playoff spot with an 84-80 win over the Dallas Wings. The Valkyries are the first expansion team in WNBA history to make the playoffs in their inaugural season. When the Wings jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the opening minutes, it looked like it might not be the Valkyries' night.
