Wanner beeindruckte in der abgelaufenen Saison mit 41 Pflichtspielen im Heidenheim-Trikot, darunter acht in der Conference League. Sechs Tore und vier Vorlagen sprechen für ihn. Vor allem in der Bundesliga war er konstant im Einsatz (29 Spiele).

Anders als Maurice Krattenmacher (19), der an den SSV Ulm ausgeliehen war, ist Wanner nicht für die Klub-WM in den USA eingeplant. Stattdessen reist er mit dem DFB zur U21-EM (11. bis 28. Juni).
In der Slowakei trifft das Team von U21-Coach Antonio Di Salvo (45) und Co-Trainer-Legende Hermann Gerland (70) in Gruppe B auf England, Tschechien und Slowenien.
