Angel Reese fights in a fierce power struggle with NaLyssa Smith refusing to back down

Article arrow_drop_down

Angel Reese isn’t here to make friends – and if you’ve watched the Chicago Sky lately, you already know. She’s out to make a statement, and it seems like no one is going to stand in her way. Reese may not be the most polished player in the WNBA just yet, but she’s certainly making a case for being the most confrontational. Whether it’s chaos as strategy or simply unfiltered passion, the message clear: she won’t be pushed around.

Chicago’s on a solid streak, but Reese’s fire isn’t cooling off anytime soon. In fact, her on-court intensity seems to be rising with every win. Her ability to stir things up is practically a trademark at this point. The only downside is that the league has started taking notice – and so have the refs, with technical fouls stacking up just as quickly as her rebounds.

When history refuses to stay in the past

Reese’s latest clash with Wings forward NaLyssa Smith wasn’t just a scuffle – it was a continuation of something brewing since Reese’s rookie year. These two have a history, and it showed. Midway through the fourth quarter, Smith caught a pass in the post and took a hard bump from Reese – who added a little extra flair with a shove on the way down. Smith wasn’t having it. She spiked the ball to the hardwood and let her frustration fly.

The refs weren’t far behind with the whistles. Both players were hit with technicals, but the real tension? That played out in glares, words, and body language that said: this is far from over.

Top Plays of The Day, 5/31/25

This might be personal, and it shows

Reese thrives in the spotlight. She knows exactly how to turn a moment into an Angel moment- and how to get into her opponents’ heads while she’s at it. Smith, on the other hand, isn’t the type to step back either, especially not with their shared past adding fuel to the fire. The back-and-forth wasn’t just about a foul – it was about control, dominance, and who owns the floor when they’re both on it.

This wasn’t their first showdown, and judging by how both players walked away – still visibly fired up – it won’t be the last. In a league where reputations matter and rivalries run deep, Reese vs. Smith is quickly becoming one of the most intriguing storylines to watch.

No backing down – just looking ahead

Whether it’s strategy, adrenaline, or sheer will to win, Angel Reese isn’t toning it down for anyone – and NaLyssa Smith made it clear she’s not stepping aside either. These are two players with something to prove, and they’re doing it loudly, unapologetically, and face to face.

The season’s still young, but if this is any preview of what’s to come – buckle up.

Ranking every NBA team’s No. 2 option in 2025-26: Where does LeBron James land among league’s best co-stars?

Anyone can list the best players in the NBA, but basketball is as much about chemistry as it is talent. Within each of the league's 30 teams is a hierarchy, and how well each of the five players on the court understands and performs his role within that hierarchy is every bit as important as his individual skill. While depth was vital to the success of the Thunder and Pacers last season, and we understand coaches often say, "It's about who closes the game; not who starts it," the pursuit of a roster's most cohesive five-man unit is still paramount. Three of last year's top four starting lineups on our list — the Thunder, Knicks and Timberwolves — reached the conference finals.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIn this series, we rank each team's starters for a broader look across the league. Why Tiger Woods still means so much to so many

Golf doesn’t do field stormings. Patrons tend to hold themselves to somewhat higher standards — or somewhat more restrained expressions of emotion — than college students. Politely applaud achievement from outside the ropes, that’s the customary golf way. Except for September 23, 2018. On that day, the final day of the 2017 Tour Championship, the golf world did indeed see a field storming. As Tiger Woods walked up the 18th green at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, just a few steps away from his first victory in five years, the gallery burst right through the flimsy barrier of rope and decorum. Thousands followed in Tiger’s wake, a reverential congregation delirious with joy, gratitude and communion wine in the form of $15 beers. AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe delirium that ran through the crowd on that afternoon at East Lake was the kind of communal disbelief […]
