Zwei Wochen später feierte der Klub die Bundesliga-Rückkehr. Weitere 14 Tage vergingen, bis Kessler von den Vereinsgremien die Zustimmung für die Verpflichtung seines Wunschtrainers Lukas Kwasniok (43) erhielt.
Ab Sonntagabend ging es für den Sportchef um den Abschluss mit Kwasniok und eine Einigung mit dem SC Paderborn, wo der Trainer noch bis 2026 unter Vertrag stand. Am Mittwoch kam es zur Einigung. Der Zweitligist lässt Kwasniok für rund eine Mio. Euro Ablöse zum FC ziehen.
Offensiv-Star Johannesson kommt von Düsseldorf nach Köln

Kessler macht Tempo – und investiert. Am Samstag verpflichtete er den zweiten Millionen-Star. Dem Nachbarn Fortuna Düsseldorf schnappte er den zentralen Mittelfeldspieler Isak Johannesson (22) weg, indem er die Ausstiegsklausel (5,5 Mio. Ablöse) des Isländers am letztmöglichen Tag aktivierte.
Ein Spieler, den Kwasniok vor einem Jahr nach Paderborn holen wollte, den Kampf damals aber verlor. Jetzt bekommt er Johannesson, der vergangene Saison elf Treffer für Düsseldorf erzielt und sechs vorbereitet hat, für die Bundesliga nach Köln.

Die Offensive nimmt damit Formen an. Zuvor hatte Kessler bereits Ragnar Ache (26) vom 1. FC Kaiserslautern geholt. Festgeschriebene Ablöse: 4,5 Mio. Euro. Die Transfers zeigen, dass das Spar-Diktat von Ex-Geschäftsführer Christian Keller (46) mit dessen Entlassung Anfang Mai aufgehoben wurde. Entscheidend ist wieder die Qualität, nicht der (niedrigste) Preis am Tag der Verpflichtung.
Rund zwölf Millionen Euro hatte der FC für neue Spieler auf der hohen Kante. Zehn Mio. sind weg. Aber es kommen wieder Einnahmen hinzu. Etwa für Außenverteidiger Max Finkgräfe (21). Neben Frankfurt und Stuttgart greift nun Hoffenheim in das Rennen um den Junioren-Nationalspieler ein. Mindestens drei Millionen Euro Ablöse soll er bringen.
[–>Teurer wäre Eric Martel (23/Marktwert 6 Mio.). Köln will den bis 2026 gültigen Vertrag des Leistungsträgers, der im Mittelfeld als auch in der Innenverteidigung spielen kann, verlängern. Gibt es keine Einigung, ist ein Verkauf wahrscheinlich. Dann müsste Kessler im Mittelfeld weiter aufrüsten.
Derzeit hat die Abwehr Priorität. Ein Innenverteidiger und ein Außenverteidiger sollen kommen, um Kwasniok einen Kader hinzustellen, mit dem der Klassenerhalt realistisch ist.
