El unicornio español de 2,21 m y 18 años se despide de UCLA y podría volver a Europa o apuntarse al draft NBA

Aday Mara no regresará la próxima temporada a UCLA, según informa el diario LA Times. El pívot español de 2,18 m y 18 años daría así por concluido su periplo en la prestigiosa franquicia californiana de la que, si se confirma la noticia, se despediría tras acreditar promedios de 6,4 puntos, 4 rebotes y 1,6 tapones en 13 minutos de media por encuentro en su segunda temporada allí.

El pívot zaragozano, llamado a ser el interior más poderoso de la selección española a medio plazo, no ha gozado de todas las oportunidades que creía merecer, alternando partidos con gran protagonismo a otros en los que apenas ha contado para su entrenador, Mick Cronin.

No le han convencido

En las dos rondas del March Madness que disputó UCLA Mara jugó 20 minutos por partido con promedios de 8.5 puntos, 5.5 rebotes, 4 tapones y 2.5 asistencias. Pero ni ese caramelito ni el reciente fichaje del prometedor base Donovan Dent, que a priori era uno de los movimientos para convencer al maño de que siguiera una temporada, le han convencido.

Su mejor actuación de esta campaña fue en el partido ante Wisconsin el pasado 22 de enero, en el que firmó 22 puntos con un 100% de acierto en tiros de campo, 5 rebotes y 2 tapones en 21 minutos. Desde entonces, tan solo en 2 de los 13 choques restantes se quedó por debajo de los 10 minutos de juego, lo que había sido una constante en los primeros meses de temporada. Pero ese aumento de protagonismo no ha sido suficiente.

Ahora se abre un interrogante mayúsculo sobre su futuro. Una de las opciones es regresar a Europa, donde seguro que no le faltarían ofertas de algunos de los grandes del continente. No hay muchos jugadores con su físico, su descomunal envergadura, su margen de mejora y su extraordinario potencial. Aunque tendría que resolver su salida del Casademont Zaragoza, que en su día le reclamó que abonase los 700.000 euros de su cláusula.

Otra opción que le queda al zaragozano tras descartar su continuidad en UCLA es apuntarse al draft de la NBA. O incluso cambiar de equipo en la NCAA si se apunta al portal de transferencias habilitado por la liga para eso. Por ahora no parece que tenga decidido su futuro. “No lo sé. Voy a tomarme un tiempo y a descansar, irme a España y ya está”, dijo hace unos días tras ser preguntado por su futuro tras la eliminación de UCLA. En los próximos días conoceremos cuál es el siguiente paso que da este gigante del baloncesto español.
