Rozvod iniciovala třiatřicetiletá manželka legendárního plavce. „Je to jedno z nejbolestivějších a nejnáročnějších období mého života,“ vyťukala na instagramu. Manželství se čtyřicetiletým přítelem nejúspěšnějšího olympionika všech dob a plaveckého parťáka Michaela Phelpse vydrželo sedm let.

Lochteovi spolu mají tři děti, ale také velké finanční problémy. Jak ze soudních dokumentů zjistil americký magazín US Weekly, jen na daních dluží někdejší plavec se svou ženou americkému federálnímu úřadu asi 100 000 dolarů.

Olympijský šampion Ryan Lochte a jeho žena Kayla se rozvádí.

Z dokumentů je rovněž dohledatelné, že na společnou nemovitost manželů Lochteových v Gainesville na Floridě bylo uvaleno zástavní právo ve výši 22 000 dolarů. Pár celkem dluží přibližně 270 000 dolarů (asi 8 850 000 korun).

„Někdy čelíme zkouškám, které jsme si nevybrali ani nečekali. A v takových chvílích jsme nuceni činit ta nejtěžší rozhodnutí, abychom ochránili své děti a svou budoucnost,“ okomentovala své rozhodnutí bývalá modelka.

Lochteho kariéra začala nabírat hvězdné parametry v roce 2004 na olympiádě v Aténách. S americkou štafetou na 4 × 200 metrů pod vedením fenomenálního Phelpse vybojoval zlato. Na stejných hrách sbírku rozšířil ještě o stříbro v polohovém závodě na 200 metrů.

Medaile sbíral i na následujících hrách, 2008 (Peking), 2012 (Londýn) a 2016 (Rio de Janeiro). Pod pěti kruhy jich bral celkem 12, mezi muži je historicky druhým nejlepším plavcem hned po Phelpsovi.

Ze světových šampionátů má Lochte neuvěřitelných 65 medailí, z toho 39 zlatých. Od roku 2011 je držitelem světového rekordu v polohovém závodě na 200 metrů v dlouhém bazénu.

Olympiáda v Brazílii pro Lochteho skončila fiaskem. V Riu de Janeiro si vymyslel historku o přepadení. Později vyšlo najevo, že se tím snažil zakrýt své opilecké chování, při němž s kamarády poničil čerpací stanici. Od národního svazu za to dostal distanc na deset měsíců.

V roce 2018 veřejně oznámil, že se potýká se závislostí na alkoholu. Později mu byl také zakázán start za nedovolenou infuzi.
