At the center of it all are rising stars like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, whose personalities shine just as bright as their game. But when Reese recently dropped a comparison that linked her to none other than Michael Jordan, fans had… a lot to say.
Angel Reese’s puffy eyes show recent struggles
During an interview, the Chicago Sky forward was asked which NBA legend she modeled her game after. Without skipping a beat, Reese answered: Michael Jordan.
“I modeled my game after him as a kid,” she said. “I used to mimic everything he did on the court, both offensively and defensively. We’re very similar players.”
No hedging. No soft disclaimers. Just a straight-up MJ comparison.
Fans Didn’t Hold Back-and Social Media Lit Up
As expected, the internet had thoughts. A few fans went straight to mockery.
“Surely she meant DeAndre Jordan,”one user joked.“She plays like Patrick Ewing after the Monstars took his skills,”another wrote. The quote spread fast, turning Reese’s answer into a meme within hours.
The backlash wasn’t entirely surprising-after all, even NBA legends get grilled when they bring up Jordan’s name. But some felt the criticism said more about the internet than it did about Reese.
“People forget how young she is and how early she is in her career,” tweeted ESPN’s Andraya Carter. “There’s nothing wrong with confidence. It’s actually refreshing.”
Confidence or Controversy? Maybe Both
While it’s easy to dunk on the MJ comparison, others pointed out that Reese wasn’t claiming she was Jordan-just that she patterned her style after him. Her drive, swagger, and defensive edge? All inspired by the GOAT.
And if you’ve watched her play, especially in clutch moments, the confidence tracks.
“She’s always been unapologetically herself,” said The Athletic’s Chantel Jennings. “That’s why people either love her or love to hate her.”
So yes, maybe the MJ comparison was bold-but bold is exactly what makes Angel Reese one of the most talked-about names in sports right now.
And like it or not, she’s not stepping back from that spotlight anytime soon.
