The day the news dropped, Mulkey shared Johnson’s selection on Instagram – short, sweet, and without a single mention of Angel Reese, the former LSU star now lighting up the WNBA with the Chicago Sky. But it didn’t take fans long to read between the lines.

Johnson had just appeared on The Breakfast Club, where she confirmed the rumors that she and Reese no longer speak. “We’re not friends,” she said. “But that bond – winning a championship – that’s forever.” She went on to mention “media and locker room stuff” as reasons for the disconnect.
It wasn’t a dramatic tell-all. Johnson kept things respectful and even praised Reese’s performance in the pros:“She’s killing it in the WNBA. I’m proud of her.” But the candid moment still hit like a spark in a room full of dry kindling – especially with Mulkey’s timing on that Instagram post.
It wasn’t just about congratulating Johnson. It felt like a quiet vote of confidence – and maybe even a declaration of who’s leading this LSU team moving forward.
Since arriving at LSU in 2021, Mulkey’s had to manage her share of strong personalities and big headlines. From a national championship to public tensions, she’s kept the focus on results. Now, her spotlight is clearly on Johnson, who averaged 18.6 points last season and is primed to be LSU’s face in 2025.
With the Team USA trials on deck and a fresh season ahead, Johnson’s got momentum. Reese may be making waves in Chicago, but in Baton Rouge, it’s Flau’jae’s team now – and Mulkey isn’t hiding it.
