Drelon Miller of the Colorado Buffaloes isn’t just preparing for the upcoming NCAA football season, he’s waiting on a gift from Deion Sanders that carries emotional and symbolic weight.
The freshman wide receiver is not hoping for game time or coaching trust like most of his peers, he has set his sights on something more specific: the No. 1 jersey.

Miller has made it clear that the jersey isn’t simply about aesthetics or tradition. For him, the No. 1 represents a pivotal moment in his life, one shaped by personal history, loss, and transformation.
His desire to wear the number under Deion is rooted not only in athletic ambition but in honoring his late father, Chris Miller, as he makes the request to Coach Prime at Folsom Field.
“I was always No. 3 in football growing up because that was my dad’s number,” Miller explained in an interview with Darrius Sanders of Reach The People Media. “Then in middle school, I wore No. 2 for basketball because they didn’t have No. 3. So he was like, ‘One-that’s going to feature you in high school.’
“He told me to change to No. 1, and with him passing, ever since I wore No. 1 in football, my life just changed.”
Could Miller getting the No. 1 jersey put Deion Sanders under pressure?
Miller’s request, while deeply personal, intersects with a larger debate in Boulder., however, as the No. 1 jersey is strongly associated with former Colorado star Eric Bieniemy.
He remains the program’s all-time leader in rushing yards (3,940), rushing touchdowns (42), and all-purpose yards (4,351), although his jersey has not been retired yet.
Therefore Miller could pick it up, but he will run the risk of controversy as assigning Bieniemy’s former number to a freshman could be interpreted as dismissive of his legacy – especially after Deion retire the jerseys of his son Shedeur (No. 2), and Travis Hunter (No. 12).
Yet for Drelon, the number is more than just a legacy jersey. It marks a turning point in his career trajectory. He credits the switch to No. 1 with a sudden rise in recruitment attention and visibility, adding it fundamentally changed his future in football.
“My receiver coach always says, ‘Control what you can control,'” Miller acknowledged. “So that’s not in my control.
“That’s up to Coach Prime, and hopefully, I get it. Hopefully, he gifts it to me during fall camp. I feel like that’ll be a good gift.”
At 6-foot-1, Miller brings athleticism and energy to the Colorado offense amid an opportunity for new talent to step forward. If Miller earns that role, wearing the No. 1 jersey could mark not only the continuation of his own journey but the symbolic passing of the torch from Colorado legends to a new generation.
