The relationship between athletes and the media is a delicate balancing act. In recent days, Rory McIlroy has stirred controversy by refusing to speak to the press during tournaments, drawing both praise and criticism. Amid the debate, Paige Spiranac couldn’t resist weighing in.
Over the past few weeks, McIlroy left the clubhouse at both the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open without giving post-round interviews. According to him, the 2025 Masters champion feels he has earned the right to skip media obligations.
“I feel like I’ve earned the right to do whatever I want to do,” McIlroy said, igniting backlash. “I was sort of thinking: do I really want two more days here or not? So it makes it easier to play better when you’re in that mindset.” As one of golf’s most influential voices, Spiranac had something to say.
Paige’s perspective
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), the golfer-turned-influencer shared what she called an “unpopular opinion.”
“There might be an unpopular opinion here, but he doesn’t have to talk to the media if he doesn’t want to. It’s not required.”
Spiranac doubled down, pointing out that McIlroy’s relationship with the press has been far from smooth.
“And why would he when everyone is always analyzing and criticizing his every move? There is clearly something else going on, none of us are privy to, so maybe let’s not all pile on.”
Will McIlroy make peace with the media?
This weekend, McIlroy competed in the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. Next week, he’s set to play in the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands, followed by the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in July.
Will McIlroy continue to give the press the silent treatment? And will Spiranac keep backing his stance, despite the media’s central role in sports? The coming weeks will be telling.
