The Los Angeles Rams have shown renewed interest in bringing Jalen Ramsey back to the West Coast, and the cornerback appears open to such a reunion as he finds himself poised for an exit from the Miami Dolphins.
Despite attempts from the Floridian NFL team to trade him away since April, nothing has yet materialized and the initial expectation of the matter being handled by June 1 has gone.
Ramsey is set to earn a fully guaranteed $24.235 million in 2025, which complicates negotiations, so now the Dolphins may need to absorb part of his salary to facilitate a trade.
And according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter on The Pat McAfee Show, their options are already limited as Ramsey “would like to go to the West Coast, to Los Angeles – Rams, Chargers, somewhere like that.”
Schefter also projected that an agreement will likely be reached before training camps start in roughly a month, meaning executives at the Hard Rock Stadium are trying to move with urgency.
Why does Jalen Ramsey want to leave the Dolphins?
The Dolphins made a high-profile move in 2023 when they acquired Ramsey from the Rams, giving up a third-round draft pick and tight end Hunter Long to add the Pro Bowl cornerback to their roster in a bid to elevate their playoff prospects.
Ramsey‘s reputation as an elite shutdown corner was expected to transform the Dolphins‘ secondary and impose a greater threat to opposing quarterbacks. However, less than two years later, he’s back on the trading block.
The Dolphins find themselves at a critical juncture, weighing whether to keep a player with undeniable talent but whose presence may no longer fit their evolving team dynamic as on-field results have created questions about whether his continued presence benefits the squad.
Ramsey‘s impact in Miami was initially seen as transformative. His ability to lock down top wide receivers and disrupt passing games, but now he seems destined to be property shopping somewhere else in the United States before September.
The decision to trade Ramsey could yield valuable draft assets or free up cap space, yet it means parting with one of the league’s top cornerbacks as the Pittsburgh Steelers also appear interested.
The cornerback’s preference to return to the West Coast reflects both personal and professional considerations as Los Angeles offers familiarity and an opportunity to play for one of the league’s most prominent franchises once again.
The Rams, who originally traded him away, remain interested fresh off the back of their run to the NFC Championship Game, as do the Los Angeles Chargers as they bid to disrupt the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West.
As the trade deadline draws near, the Dolphins must carefully consider the best course of action for their roster and future, balancing immediate competitiveness with longer-term roster construction. Whilst for Ramsey, the coming weeks could mark a defining moment in his career.
