Carson Beck’s move from Georgia to the University of Miami was set to be a new start, but he’s already under a lot of expectations. The former Bulldogs quarterback is filling the spot of Cam Ward, who not only took the Hurricanes to a great 2024 season but also was the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. That’s a hard job to take up, and people on the inside are telling fans not to expect for the same kind of show.
Beck, once seen as a top NFL hope, saw his value drop after a rough 2024 season. Even with a good run of 24-3 as a first picker, he had 12 interception in just six games and got an elbow injury that cut his season short. That unjury, mixed with weak guard and missed catches at Georgia, made him leave the NFL Draft and go into the transfer space.

The Miami beast
Now at Miami, Beck is set to lead as QB1 in an attack that did well under Ward. But as ESPN’s Taylor Tannebaum put it plain: “Carson Beck is not Cam Ward.” Rather than copy Ward’s way, she said that Miami should help Beck use his own strong points, like his skill to stay calm, hit right, and lead.
Head coach Mario Cristobal has said he fully trusts Beck, noting he fits well with Miami’s NFL-style attack. Cristobal thinks the Hurricanes can give better cover and a more even attack, adding a top run game that was third in the country in run yards last season. Offensive lead Shannon Dawson is also changing the game plan to fit Beck’s skills, with focus on quick reads, play-action, and intermediate throws.
Always in the media eye
The looks comparing him to Ward are tough to miss. Ward came in fourth in Heisman votes and lifted Miami’s name high. His leaving made a gap not just in skill, but in leading and who they are. Beck’s task isn’t just to win games, t’s to win over fans who have seen what top quarterback play can be.
Adding to the weight, Beck’s NIL worth is said to be $4.3 million, making him one of the top paid in college ball. That money spot only lifts hopes for a quarterback who’s still getting over arm surgery and getting used to a new way.
Miami starts its 2025 season against Notre Dame on August 31, a key game that might set the path for Beck’s time. If he does well, it might silence the critics and put his NFL path back on track. If not, the looks to Ward and the doubts will only get louder.
