Überraschender Königstransfer – Euro-Held wechselt die Farben

Eine Saison wie diese soll es bei den Telekom Baskets Bonn nicht wieder geben. Mit Platz 14 in der Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga verpasste der Traditionsklub krachend die Play-offs. Im Kader mit guten Einzelkönnern passten die Puzzleteile nicht zusammen. Dazu fehlte es an Führungskräften.

Zumindest das zweite Problem ist jetzt gelöst. Denn mit der Verpflichtung von Euro-Held Jeff Garrett (30) haben sich die Bonner einen Charakter-Spieler gesichert. Der Königstransfer kommt von den Niners Chemnitz und gilt als einer der besten „Bigs“ der Liga. Und war vor einem Jahr maßgeblich daran beteiligt, dass die Sachsen sensationell den FIBA Europe Cup gewannen.

[–>„Als vielseitiger Flügelspieler kann er offensiv auf gleich drei Positionen spielen und auch defensiv unterschiedlichste Match-Ups übernehmen“, schwärmt Trainer Marko Stankovic (41). „Diese taktische Flexibilität und seine physische Präsenz verleihen unserem Spiel die Stabilität und Härte, die uns in der vergangenen Saison oft gefehlt haben.“

Dass die Bonner die 2,01-Meter-Kante den Niners wegschnappen konnten, zeigt auch die finanziellen Möglichkeiten auf dem Hardtberg! Zudem wurde der Transfer durch die Unruhe in Chemnitz zwischen Coach Rodrigo Pastore (52) und Teilen der Mannschaft begünstigt. Fakt ist: Mehrere ehemalige Kollegen gratulierten dem ehemaligen MVP-Kandidaten per Social Media zu seinem Wechsel.

Bonns Sportdirektor Savo Milovic (39) ist auf jeden Fall happy: „Jeff war schon seit Längerem einer unserer Wunschspieler. Egal, wo er bislang gespielt hat: Er hat immer sein Herz auf dem Parkett gelassen und alles für seine Klubs gegeben. Mit dieser Einstellung und Spielweise passt er perfekt nach Bonn.“

Aufbau-Spieler Ost

Eines der Hauptprobleme bei Garretts Ex-Klubs war, dass man bei den Niners ohne klassischen Spielmacher in die Saison gestartet war. Das stellte sich als Fehler heraus. Und die Unwucht im Kader war bis zum Ende nur schwer auszugleichen.

Das soll nicht wieder passieren. Darum kehrt Europe-Cup-Held Kaza Kajami-Keane (31) zurück. Laut „Freie Presse“ plant Pastore für die erste Saison im EuroCup zudem mit Corey Davis (27) vom italienischen Klub Vanoli Basket Cremona als zweiten Point Guard.

Kein Gerücht, sondern offiziell bestätigt ist die Verpflichtung von John Edward Newman III (25). Der Swingman überzeugte in der abgelaufenen Spielzeit beim belgischen Erstligisten Kortrijk Spurs unter dem langjährigen BBL-Trainer Johan Roijakkers (44/Bamberg, Göttingen) und unterschrieb einen 1+1-Vertrag (Option auf zweites Jahr). Pastore schätzt an ihm das, was er diese Saison oft vermisste: seine Energie!

Nächster Führungsspieler heuert in Rostock an

Ein paar Wochen war es nach dem Saison-Ende bei den Rostock Seawolves vergleichsweise ruhig. Nun kommen die Personal-Meldungen Schlag auf Schlag.

Nach dem Coup mit Chemnitz-Kapitän DeAndre Lansdowne (36) kommt mit Center Owen Klassen (33) von den Fit/One Würzburg Baskets ein weiterer, erfahrener Führungsspieler an die Ostsee. Der 2,08 Meter große Kanadier hat 223 BBL-Spiele auf dem Buckel (Hagen, Würzburg, Braunschweig, Oldenburg, Ludwigsburg) und unterschrieb einen Zwei-Jahres-Vertrag. Klassen: „Meine Familie und ich freuen uns, in Deutschland zu bleiben, und sind gespannt, was das Leben in Rostock zu bieten hat.“

Was er basketballerisch zu bieten hat, beschreibt Sportchef Kevin Anstett (33) so: „Owen verkörpert genau das, was wir auf der Center-Position suchen: Er ist intelligent, physisch stark und spielt gute Defense.“

Erwartungsgemäß nicht zu halten war dagegen Bryce Hamilton (24/USA). Der Top-Scorer hatte zwar auch Angebote aus der BBL, entschied sich aber für Down Under und spielt kommende Saison in Australien für die Tasmania JackJumpers.

Riesen wollen variabler werden

Bevor der neue Coach der MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg, Mikko Riipinen (37), für seinen Zweitjob als schwedischer Nationaltrainer zur EM aufbricht, soll der Kader weitestgehend stehen. Und das sieht gut aus: Nach der Verpflichtung von Allrounder Elijah Hughes (27/USA) sind nur noch zwei Planstellen offen.

Hughes spielte letzte Saison beim spanischen Ausbildungs-Klub Rio Breogan in der Top-Liga ACB und unterschrieb in der Barockstadt für sein erstes BBL-Engagement einen Ein-Jahresvertrag. Der Flügelmann (1,96 Meter, 98 Kilo) aus New York will in Ludwigsburg den Durchbruch als Stammspieler schaffen. Riipinen ist überzeugt davon, dass er es schafft: „Elijah ist ein sehr talentierter Spieler, der auf höchstem Niveau gespielt hat. Allerdings ist der europäische Basketball wirklich hart und es benötigt Zeit, sich daran zu gewöhnen.“

In Europa durchsetzen will sich auch Lars Masell (44). Der Co-Trainer war in der abgelaufenen Saison nach der Entlassung von Headcoach John Patrick (57) als Interims-Trainer eingesprungen. Weil man ihm dann Riipinen vor die Nase setzte, bat Marsell nun um Auflösung seines Vertrags (bis 2026), um einen neuen Job im Ausland anzunehmen …

„Möwe“ fliegt aus Finnland nach Oldenburg

Die EWE Baskets Oldenburg besetzen ihren ersten Ausländer-Spot meisterlich – mit Tevin Olison (26/USA). Der Guard kommt vom finnischen Champions Helsinki Seagulls („Möwen“) unterschrieb bis 2027, mit Ausstiegsoption nach dem ersten Jahr.

Vor seinem Engagement im hohen Norden spielte der 1,94 Meter große und wurfstarke Olison zwei Jahre in der britischen Liga bei den Bristol Flyers. In Oldenburg bekommt er die Rolle als zweiter Aufbauspieler.
