With the much-anticipated Happy Gilmore 2 set to premiere on Netflix July 25, fans of the original 1996 classic are eager to see the return of Adam Sandler in one of his most iconic roles.
But it’s not just the old favorites making waves-Kansas City Chiefs star tight end Travis Kelce has found himself in the spotlight for an unexpected reason: his acting.
Kelce makes a surprise cameo in the sequel, which reunites Sandler with longtime co-star Christopher McDonald, known for playing the infamous golf rival Shooter McGavin.
During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, McDonald revealed his surprising admiration for Kelce, despite being a die-hard Buffalo Bills fan.
“I have a love-hate relationship with Travis Kelce,” McDonald admitted. “His team beats my Buffalo Bills way too often. And I blame the refs sometimes.”
Despite the football rivalry, McDonald didn’t hold back in praising Kelce‘s performance. “He’s a tremendous guy… I really loved the guy as a person. And, surprisingly, a very good actor. He had too much fun.”
The cameo sees Kelce playing an overexcited golf attendant, delivering the now-viral trailer line: “It’s great to see you back, Mr. Gilmore.” While brief, the moment showcases Kelce’s signature charisma-and his growing comfort in front of the camera.
From the field to the screen
Travis Kelce‘s appearance in Happy Gilmore 2 is part of a broader push into the entertainment world. Known for his outsized personality, Kelce has been expanding his off-field résumé with TV hosting gigs like Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?, acting roles in FX’s upcoming Grotesquerie, and co-hosting the wildly successful New Heights podcast with his brother, Jason Kelce.
His Happy Gilmore 2 co-star McDonald wasn’t the only one impressed. Reports from the set noted Kelce’s natural comedic timing and strong on-screen presence.
Even Adam Sandler, who handpicked many of the film’s cameos, reportedly said working with Kelce was a highlight of filming.
The Netflix sequel isn’t skimping on star power. Alongside Kelce‘s appearance, audiences can expect cameos from pro athletes across golf, football, and even surprise names from music and comedy. But Kelce‘s role seems to stand out not just because of who he is-but how well he delivers.
For fans of the Chiefs, Sandler, or just great sports-comedy moments, Kelce‘s appearance will be one to watch. As McDonald put it, “He’s got game”-and not just on the football field.
