Seamos serios. Usain Bolt sólo ha habido y habrá uno. El ‘Relámpago’ jamaicano marcó una época en la velocidad mundial y atesora los tres tiempos más rápidos de la historia, incluido el récord mundial (9.58) vigente desde los mundiales de Berlín en 2009.
Bolt nunca tuvo un rival a su altura y nunca sabremos hasta dónde podría haber llegado con alguien que le hubiera realmente apretado durante su carrera. Cuando estableció la actual plusmarca tenía apenas 22 años así que no es descabellado pensar que podría haber corrido más rápido.
Dicho todo esto, Jamaica parece haber encontrado al fin un nuevo rey para la velocidad mundial de la mano de Kishane Thompson, el hombre que se quedó a sólo cinco milésimas del oro olímpico en París hace menos de un año.
Thompson, de 23 años, no es por tanto un desconocido pero no había corrido tan rápido hasta ayer en los ‘trials’ jamaicanos de cara al Mundial de Tokio del mes de septiembre.
El antillano se impuso en las semifinales con 9.80 (0.4), mejor marca mundial del año, pero fue en la final donde ‘reventó’ el crono, corriendo en 9.75 (0.8). Para que se ponga en valor, basta decir que es la mejor marca mundial desde 2015…
¿Al fin un heredero?
Dicho de otro modo, nadie había corrido tan rápido desde la retirada de Usain Bolt. Ni Noah Lyles, ni Marcell Jacobs, ni Fred Kerley, ni Christian Coleman, todos ellos campeones olímpicos y/o mundiales en los últimos seis años.
Thompson tenía una mejor marca personal de 9.77, lograda en el mismo escenario, el National Stadium de Kingston, durante los ‘trials’ olímpicos del pasado año. Ayer ganó escoltado por Oblique Seville, finalista en los últimos tres campeonatos mundiales, con 9.83, y Ackeem Blake, campeón de la Diamond League 2024, con 9.88, marca personal.

Esos 9.75 han hecho escalar a Kishane Thompson de la décima a la sexta plaza de la lista de todos los tiempos. Aún le superan, además de Bolt, Tyson Gay y Yohan Blake con 9.69, Asafa Powel con 9.72 y Justin Gatlin con 9.74.
Tras esta exhibición, el mundo de atletismo espera expectante lo que pueda ocurrir en Tokio, donde Lyles deberá defender la corona lograba en Budapest hace dos años antes un Thompson al alza.
“Nunca me sorprenderé, porque sé lo capaz que soy. Tengo mucha confianza; incluso si rompo el récord mundial, no me sorprendería, porque tengo esa confianza y estoy trabajando para alcanzar todas mis metas y los reconocimientos”, aseguró el jamaicano tras ganar el título nacional.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce es eterna
La exhibición de Thompson fue uno de los dos grandes momentos que nos regalaron los ‘trials’ jamaicanos. El otro tuvo como protagonista a la doble campeona olímpica y quíntuple mundial Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, que a sus 38 años logró una plaza para el Mundial de Tokio en el hectómetro.
La leyenda femenina de la velocidad, que es la tercera mujer más rápida de la historia con 10.60, anunció hace dos días que esta será su última temporada y se va a despedir a lo grande. Porque no muchos apostaban porque lograse una plaza para Tokio más allá del 4×100.

Pero Fraser-Pryce no para de sorprendernos y logró acabar tercera con un crono de 10.91 (0.1) en una carrera que dominó la bicampeona mundial sub’20 Tina Clayton con 10.81, marca personal. La bicampeona mundial de 200 metros Shericka Jackson fue segunda con 10.88.
“Agradezco ese espíritu de lucha que me dice que nunca se acaba hasta que se acaba, y que una vez que pongo el pie en la línea de salida, estoy lista. Saber que no estoy en mi mejor momento para correr y correr en 10.91 segundos es un gran logro”, aseguró Fraser-Pryce tras la carrera.
“Mucha gente no sabe que Japón fue donde competí en mis primeros campeonatos internacionales sénior”, añadió Fraser-Pryce, quien corrió las eliminatorias del 4×100 para Jamaica en el Campeonato Mundial de 2007 en Osaka. “Volver a Japón es un momento crucial para mí”, finalizó.
