The New York Giants have decided to exercise patience with Jaxson Dart, and Head Coach Brian Daboll has confirmed that Russell Wilson will be the starting quarterback for the team in Week 1 of the NFL. This positions the first-round draft pick as the third-string quarterback, though things could take an unexpected turn after a few weeks of the season.

Some experts even believe the former Ole Miss player could see action sooner than anticipated, a scenario that has been discussed throughout the offseason.
Factors in favor of Jaxson Dart
Dan Graziano of ESPN believes Dart could make his NFL debut earlier than the Giants have planned.
“Every year, it seems there’s at least one team telling us it wants to sit its rookie quarterback as long as possible – all year if necessary,” Graziano commented. “The Giants signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston to make double sure they had capable veteran options while Dart developed into an NFL-ready starter. But the reality is, it rarely works out.”
For context, Graziano pointed to the New England Patriots, where Jacoby Brissett started before handing the reins to Drake Maye. Or the Atlanta Falcons, who, despite signing Kirk Cousins to a massive four-year contract, turned to Michael Penix Jr. for the final three games of the season.
Within the Giants themselves, Phil Simms played in five games in 1979, followed by Eli Manning taking over from Kurt Warner in Week 11, and Daniel Jones replacing Manning in Week 3 of the 2019 season.
This scenario could unfold, though it doesn’t mean history will necessarily repeat itself with Jaxson Dart. The expectation is that he will work on the more complex aspects of the NFL game without being rushed.
Thus, once he’s fully ready to shine, he’ll take the reins of the offense-though this could change if results don’t go Brian Daboll‘s or the team’s way.
