Hugo González ha dejado de ser jugador del Real Madrid, según un comunicado emitido este lunes por el club. El canterano se marcha a los Celtics, que la semana pasada le seleccionaron en el puesto 28 del draft. Ese será, precisamente, el dorsal que lleve en la franquicia más laureada en la historia de la NBA.
El alero de 19 años y 1,98 metros llegó al club blanco en la temporada 2017-18 y ha pasado por todos los equipos de la cantera, de la que fue emblema y mayor promesa llegando a ser campeón del Adidas Next Generation Tournament de la Euroliga en 2023 y 2024 y ganando el MVP en la segunda de esas ediciones.

Sus condiciones y su físico le llevaron hasta el primer equipo, con el que debutó en 2022 y con el que conquistó las dos últimas Ligas Endesa, una Copa del Rey y una Supercopa Endesa. Esta campaña, ya como miembro de la primera plantilla a todos los efectos, promedió 1,9 puntos (33,3% en triples), 1,3 rebotes y 1,2 de valoración en la Euroliga y 4,5 puntos (25,0% en triples), 2,2 rebotes y 4,2 de valoración en la Liga Endesa, en la que formó parte del mejor quinteto de jóvenes.

A través de sus redes sociales, el joven jugador quiso despedirse del Madrid, “el mejor club del mundo”, y aseguró que sus caminos “se cruzarán de nuevo, de eso estoy seguro. Mientras tanto, desde la distancia, apoyaré al equipo igual o más que de jugador. Amo al Real Madrid y no puedo estar más agradecido por todo lo que me ha dado. Quien me conoce, sabe que he entregado toda mi vida al Real Madrid”

Los Celtics quieren a Hugo para ya y le ven posibilidades. Brad Stevens, mánager general de la franquicia, reconoció después del draft que ya había hablado con él y se mostró como un seguidor más del alero español: “Ha estado en el radar de todos desde hace mucho tiempo, y le hemos analizado más de cerca estas últimas temporadas con el Real Madrid. Soy un gran fan de cómo juega: es fiero, juega duro, hace cortes, persigue el balón, compite y tiene todos los intangibles propios de un ganador”.

González ha demostrado en sus minutos en el Madrid que puede marcar diferencias en defensa gracias a su instinto, su intensidad y un potente físico. En cambio, tendrá que pulir aspectos en ataque, el que más, el tiro exterior. Sobre todo porque recalará en el equipo que más triples lanza en toda la NBA. “Como cualquier jugador de su edad, seguirá mejorando en varios aspectos, pero en lo competitivo está ya a un nivel altísimo. Es un joven con alma de veterano. Lleva ya un tiempo jugando rodeado de adultos, y lo está haciendo en un equipo plagado de experiencia, con jugadores con pasado NBA y otros del más alto nivel”, valoró un esperanzado Stevens.

El alero español cruza el Atlántico este verano pero ya pudo hacerlo en el pasado. Es uno de los pocos jugadores jóvenes a los que la NCAA les puso sobre la mesa un contrato de siete cifras y prefirió quedarse en Europa. Hugo decidió seguir creciendo en el Madrid esta temporada, pero ha llegado el momento de marcharse. La NBA, concretamente los Celtics, son otra cosa. Se podrá probar con los mejores del mundo y embolsarse más de 14 millones de dólares por cuatro años según la escala salarial del draft. El último gran prodigio de la cantera madridista vestirá de verde.
