“Alonso, el maestro de las carreras”

Las caras en la sala de ingenieros de Aston Martin en Spielberg eran de asombro. “Vamos a una parada, es la mejor opción teórica”, decidieron. “A ver cómo podemos cumplirlo”, concluyó un dubitativo Alonso. El asturiano, muy aficionado al ciclismo, empezó a trazar el plan del DRS. Lo que hacía cuando entrenaba en carretera con gente más fuerte. El hándicap de la tracción en curva lenta

Había dos curvas de especial sufrimiento. La salida de la tres, con una pésima tracción, y la cuatro, con mucho subviraje. Los dos puntos de adelantamiento. Por eso pasar a Lawson en pista se antojó imposible. Yo sí hubiera intentado un undercut (parar una vuelta antes) con el objetivo de adelantar a Liam en boxes, pero eso le habría hecho batallar con el neozelandés, ser adelantado en pista, y perder las ruedas aún más en el tramo final. Luego Fernando dijo lo contrario, pero por momentos sí que pensé en directo que intentaría pasar al RB. Y esas vueltas pegado al alerón trasero de su rival castigaron más de la cuenta las duras.

Recital por la radio

La radio de Alonso fue un recital toda la carrera. Lo que en el argot se llama ‘race craft’, gestión del gran premio, en lo que el asturiano posiblemente sea el mejor de la parrilla. Y quizás uno de los mejores de la historia. Ya lo decía Toto Wolff cuando llegó a valorar al ovetense como recambio de Hamilton el año pasado: “Su manera de competir sigue siendo excelente”.

Escuchando la radio, no sabes si el ingeniero de pista lleva a Fernando o es al revés: “Este no es el ritmo real, ya veréis cuando pierda el DRS. Paramos cuando lo haga él. No sé qué tal va de balance aero el coche tío, llevo treinta vueltas detrás de un coche. Estoy a un segundo y gracias a su ritmo tengo el ritmo que tengo”.

El gozo, la admiración del equipo y la pena

Y, para terminar, la traca final. La de gestión defensiva frente a un Sauber, de Bortoleto, que le precedía en parrilla y venía como un tiro con quince vueltas menos de ruedas. Punto uno, dejarle pasar antes justo de la zona de deteccion de la frenada de la curva tres. Dos, que la salida sea los más limpia posible, y tres, devolverle el adelantamiento con el DRS. Después, a frenar tarde en la cuatro. Así lo hizo, pero casi no lo mete en la curva.

Entonces le avisaron de que venía Norris a doblarles. Fernando vio el cielo abierto,. Se ahorraba una vuelta de sufrimiento. Jonathan Wheatley, ex de Red Bull, y ahora director deportivo en Sauber, le escribía a Zack Brown para que Lando no les doblara. No tuvo éxito. La imagen que asombró a los narradores de medio mundo fue ver a Alonso a punto de desdoblarse en la cuatro, abierto a modo de pantalla frente a un Bortoletto con la boca abierta. Sonrisas en Aston Martin por la ejecución suprema y admiración del jefe de ingenieros en pista, Mike Krack: “Es impresionante cómo sigue rindiendo, otros pilotos a estas alturas de su carrera no están al mismo nivel”.

El gozo incluye una pena. No nos queda mucho tiempo para disfrutar con Alonso en la Fórmula 1. Sólo tenemos asegurado el 26, como mucho el 27. A Newey y el motor Honda nos encomendamos para verle luchar por cosas mayores. A ver las mejoras de este fin de semana en Silverstone, las últimas importantes. Debería haber retoques en el suelo producto de las charlas del mago del diseño con el pequeño grupo del AMR25. No se espera ‘McLarenazo’, pero si funcionan pueden acercar a Fernando a su siguiente sueño, un podio en una carrera loca ya en este 2025.
