Buffalo Bills cornerback Maxwell Hairston, the team’s first-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft, is at the center of a civil lawsuit alleging sexual assault during his time at the University of Kentucky.
The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Fayette County, Kentucky, was brought by Ohio resident Rebecca Hendryx, who says the assault happened in March 2021-when both she and Hairston were freshmen living in the same campus dorm. She claims Hairston entered her room uninvited, ignored her repeated rejections, and sexually assaulted her.
Hairston has not been criminally charged. His representatives, as well as the Bills, have not responded directly to the lawsuit. The team instead pointed to comments made by GM Brandon Beane back in April, shortly after Hairston was drafted. Beane said the team had looked into a past allegation and concluded there was “nothing there,” describing Hairston as “an impeccable kid,” according to The Athletic.
What We Know About the Allegation
Hendryx says she went to police within hours of the alleged assault and received a forensic exam at a local hospital. Her attorneys say they won’t release documents related to law enforcement or the university, citing confidentiality concerns.
Lexington Police said they could not find a report matching the incident. The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office has yet to comment. The University of Kentucky also declined to speak about the case, though spokesperson Dani Jaffe told USA Today that all sexual assault claims involving students are thoroughly investigated.
According to the lawsuit, Hendryx transferred out of Kentucky later that year.
While the legal process plays out, the Bills-along with the league-may find themselves under renewed scrutiny over how they evaluate off-field behavior in their draft process. Hairston was considered one of the top defensive prospects in this year’s class and is expected to play a key role in Buffalo’s secondary.
The NFL has not commented on the situation.
