Nicht nur unsere Männer, auch die DFB-Frauen warten seit über einem Jahrzehnt auf einen WM- oder EM-Sieg. Die Vorrunden-Blamage von vor zwei Jahren bei der Weltmeisterschaft in Australien ist längst aus den Köpfen, die Mädels sind vor ihrem Start in die Europameisterschaft am Freitag gegen Polen (21 Uhr, ARD live) so angriffslustig wie noch nie.
Kapitänin Giulia Gwinn (26) sagt: „Wir haben ein unfassbares Potenzial in unserer Mannschaft und ich kann mich nicht erinnern, wann ich zuletzt so davon überzeugt war, dass wir etwas Großes erreichen können. Ich spüre, dass das nicht nur bei mir so ist, sondern bei den anderen auch.“

Rekordhalter Deutschland konnte von bislang 13 gespielten Europameisterschaften am Ende achtmal den Titel feiern. Der letzte liegt aber auch schon wieder 12 Jahre zurück. Die Weltspitze ist mittlerweile so dicht beieinander wie noch nie.
Gwinn weiß: „Es gibt in diesem Jahr viele Mitfavoritinnen. Spanien, Frankreich, England, Deutschland. Wir gucken erst mal auf die Gruppe und konzentrieren uns auf die Spiele. Es ist unser großes Ziel, aus den Spielen erfolgreich rauszugehen. Trotzdem bin ich davon überzeugt, dass, wenn wir unsere Leistung auf den Platz bringen, eine andere Mannschaft uns erst mal schlagen muss.“
