Der ehemalige Dortmund-Star Axel Witsel (36) steht vor einer ungewissen Zukunft. Sein Vertrag bei Atlético Madrid ist ausgelaufen. Jetzt ist der Belgier auf Vereinssuche.

Witsel blickt auf 116 Pflichtspiele im Trikot von Atlético zurück, dabei erzielte er drei Tore und gab zwei Vorlagen. Mit 36 Jahren denkt der frühere BVB-Liebling aber noch nicht ans Aufhören. Vielmehr stellt sich nun die Frage: Wo schlägt der Mittelfeld-Stratege als Nächstes auf?

Ein neuer Klub ist bislang nicht offiziell bekannt, doch ganz ohne Optionen ist er wohl nicht. Immer wieder wird über eine mögliche Rückkehr zu Standard Lüttich spekuliert. Witsel war 1999 in die Jugend vom Klub gekommen, 2006 feierte er für die Belgier dann sein Profi-Debüt. In den folgenden Jahren wurde er zweimal Belgischer Meister und Supercupsieger (beides 2008 und 2009), dazu gewann er 2011 den Pokal. Gleichzeitig berichten mehrere Medien über Interesse aus Saudi-Arabien.

Der Nationalspieler (132 Länderspiele) hat von 2018 bis 2022 für den BVB gespielt und sich in dieser Zeit zu einer festen Größe im Mittelfeld etabliert. Vier Jahre spielte Witsel für die Borussen, wurde mit Dortmund DFB-Pokalsieger (2021) und Supercupsieger (2019). Seit 2022 lief der Abräumer für Atlético auf. Wo geht die Reise nun als Nächstes hin?
