WWE icon and Hollywood star John Cena has shared his personal battle with skin cancer, urging others to be mindful of sun protection.
The 16-time world champion, who will retire from wrestling at the end of this year, opened up about his health journey.
As Cena gears up for his final match at WrestleMania, he’s using his platform to raise awareness about the dangers of sun exposure, particularly after his own struggles with skin cancer. The 47-year-old wrestler-turned-actor revealed how he neglected sunscreen during his younger years, which eventually led to serious health complications.
A stubborn young Cena
Growing up near Newburyport and Salisbury Beach, Cena spent his summers by the water. Reflecting on his childhood, Cena explained that his mother, who raised five boys, didn’t have time to focus on sunscreen.
“She just wanted to keep us alive and healthy, and I certainly do not blame her,” he recalled to People Magazine.
But as Cena moved to Florida in his twenties, he continued to ignore sunscreen, believing it wouldn’t affect him.
“I was stubborn,” he admitted.
“I felt like the problem would never reach me.”
Despite his carefree attitude, the lack of protection caught up with Cena. After seeing a dermatologist for a checkup, he learned that a cancerous spot on his right pec needed to be removed through surgery.
Although the procedure was successful, a year later, Cena underwent another surgery to remove another spot near his right shoulder. These scares left him with visible scars, which he now carries as a reminder of the consequences of neglecting sun care.
Cena’s experience with skin cancer profoundly changed his outlook on life. He credited his dermatologist for guiding him through the process and offering support.
“The stats on this are overwhelming, but as much as I learn about them, those numbers don’t mean anything. The best way to hammer home a point is human-to-human connection,” Cena said.
“Man, that phone call’s not what you want to get because it is unpredictable and you don’t know how bad it’s going to be.”
Now, Cena is committed to spreading the message of sunscreen protection, especially through his ‘You Can’t See Me’ campaign. He wants to encourage people to take a few extra seconds every day to protect their skin from harmful UV rays.
“I’m so grateful to dodge those two bullets, but I wear them as a reminder of, ‘Hey man, you need to take the extra few seconds to protect yourself every day,'” he explained.
