The Houston Texans organization delivered a powerful message of solidarity on Saturday, announcing a $500,000 donation to aid victims of the catastrophic floods that have ravaged the Texas Hill Country this week.
The generous contribution comes amidst a desperate search for survivors, with dozens still unaccounted for, including many children from a popular summer camp. “We are heartbroken by the loss and damage that our neighbors in the Texas Hill Country have endured,” the Texans stated.
“We are especially devastated to hear about the children who are still missing and we are praying they are reunited with their families soon. Our hearts will remain with everyone affected, and in addition to our donation, we will continue to support the search, rescue and recovery efforts in the coming weeks.”
The painful losses caused by the floods
The region was hit by a brutal storm that has claimed at least 27 lives, including nine children. Officials confirmed that between 23 and 25 girls from Camp Mystic, a summer camp in Hunt, Texas, remain unaccounted for. Approximately 850 people have been rescued from the treacherous waters so far.
Thirteen-year-old Elinor Lester, a camper at Camp Mystic, described the terrifying ordeal: “The camp was completely destroyed. A helicopter landed and started taking people away. It was really scary.”
The Guadalupe River saw a shocking rise of 26 feet in less than an hour on Friday morning, turning calm waters into a raging torrent. More heavy rains are forecast for Saturday, with flash flood warnings and watches still in effect for parts of Central Texas, compounding fears.
Alex Bregman could not stay on the sidelines
The sports community is rallying behind the affected areas. Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman, a beloved figure who spent his first nine MLB seasons with the Houston Astros, has been actively using his platform on X (formerly Twitter) since Friday, sharing photos and contact information for missing individuals, adding a personal touch to the widespread plea for help.
As rescue and recovery efforts continue under challenging conditions, the Texans’ substantial donation provides crucial support, offering a beacon of hope to a community grappling with immense loss and uncertainty.
