Caitlin Clark was back. The crowd inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse let her know it, rising to their feet as theIndiana Fever guard checked in for her first game after missing five straight with a groin strain. But just minutes into the first quarter, things took an unexpected turn.
Clark, bringing the ball up the court, took light contact from a Valkyries defender and lost her footing. She slipped hard onto the floor, a moment that instantly silenced the energy in the building. It wasn’t serious-but it did set the tone for a frustrating afternoon.

Indiana never quite recovered. The Fever fell to the Golden State Valkyries 80-61 in front of their home crowd, posting one of their lowest-scoring performances of the season and shooting just 30.9% from the field. From deep, they were worse: 6-of-27 (22.2%).
Mid-Game Spark Fizzles Fast
Clark showed some signs of life despite the slip, finishing with 10 points, six assists, five boards, and a steal in 25 minutes. She shot 4-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-5 from three-a notable improvement from her pre-injury slump, where she went just 1-for-23 from long range over three games.
But Indiana’s struggles ran deeper than Clark’s individual performance. Fellow All-Stars Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell combined for just 18 points on 5-of-21 shooting. The Fever looked out of rhythm from the opening tip and never found a second gear.
Now sitting at 9-10 on the season, Indiana has four games left before the All-Star break. While Clark is expected to lead Team Clark as captain in the All-Star Game on July 19, the focus back home is on how the Fever can recalibrate before then.
Head coach Christie Sides remained upbeat postgame. “She’s working her way back,”Sides told The Athletic. “We know what she’s capable of. We’re just glad to have her back on the floor.”
Indiana fans would probably agree-but after Wednesday’s slip and slide, they’re hoping the worst is now behind her.
