Former Alabama basketball player Darius Miles will go to trial for capital murder the week of December 1, a Tuscaloosa judge confirmed this week. The decision arrives nearly two years after the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Jamea Harris, a case that rocked the college basketball world and the University of Alabama community.
Miles has been held without bail in the Tuscaloosa County Jail since January 2023, when police arrested him in connection to the late-night shooting near The Strip, a popular nightlife spot close to campus. His removal from Alabama’s basketball roster came within days.
According to investigators, Miles allegedly handed a gun to friend Michael Davis shortly before Davis fired into a Jeep during a confrontation with Cedric Johnson, Harris’ boyfriend. Harris, sitting in the front passenger seat, was struck and killed.
The spotlight now turns fully to Miles, after co-defendant Michael Davis was convicted
Back in May, a jury found Davis guilty of capital murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Prosecutors have confirmed that they will not pursue the death penalty for Miles, but if convicted, he too would face life behind bars with no chance of release.
Tuscaloosa District Attorney Paula Whitley told AL.com that a plea deal was offered to Miles, though she didn’t share specifics. Whether that deal is still on the table-or will be accepted-remains unclear.
Court documents presented during Davis’ trial included surveillance video and phone records that prosecutors say tie Miles to the weapon. His legal team is expected to challenge that connection when the trial begins.
Miles played in 53 games for Alabama over two seasons and had two career starts. His role with the Crimson Tide was limited, but his name has since become tied to one of the most tragic stories in recent college sports memory.
Jury selection is expected to begin in late November, with the trial likely stretching into mid-December.
