Deion Sanders is among the most iconic athletes in America, and his family has drawn increasing attention alongside him. With Coach Prime stepping away from the spotlight due to an undisclosed health issue, fans and media alike are asking: who’s been standing by his side during this difficult time?
The head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes is facing one of the toughest chapters of his life. For nearly a month, Sanders has retreated to his ranch in Texas to battle a mysterious illness. Fortunately, his tight-knit family hasn’t left him alone.
Social media posts from his children have revealed two things: Coach Prime is steadily overcoming his health challenges, and-most importantly-his family has been there every step of the way. So, who exactly are the members of the Sanders family?
A close-knit and sprawling clan
Sanders was born on August 9, 1967, in Fort Myers, Florida, and is about to turn 58. His parents are Mims Sanders, who passed away in 1993, and Connie Sanders. However, he was primarily raised by his stepfather, Willie Knight. He has a younger sister, Tracy Knight.
Though Sanders is currently unmarried, he’s had two previous marriages: first to Carolyn Chambers (1989-1998) and then to Pilar Sanders (1999-2015). While the latter marriage ended a decade ago, Pilar remains present in his life thanks to their shared children.
Coach Prime has five children: Deiondra (33) and Deion Jr. (31) from his relationship with Carolyn; and Shilo (25), Shedeur (23), and Shelomi (21) from his marriage to Pilar. Shilo and Shedeur are continuing the family’s football legacy and currently play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns, respectively.
Ongoing health concerns for Coach Prime
Although Sanders hasn’t revealed the nature of his recent illness, he has a history of circulation problems and blood clots, which led to the amputation of two toes in 2021.
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Coach Prime assured fans that he’s feeling better-but doubts remain about whether he’ll be ready to lead the Buffaloes in their FBS regular season opener this August.
