The recent contract renewal of Rashawn Slater, the Los Angeles Chargers’ star left tackle, was not only newsworthy for its historic figures: it also generated controversy on social media after it was indirectly linked to his divorce.
It was his own ex-wife, Stassney Brown, who raised her voice to ask that his private life be left out of the public conversation.

On Sunday, after the announcement of Slater’s new $144 million contract with $92 million guaranteed, Dov Kleiman posted on social media that the deal came at a “good time,” alluding to the player’s recent separation
Brown was quick to respond. He quoted Kleiman’s message and wrote:
“This is deplorable. I have nothing but support for Rashawn. His contract has nothing to do with me. I think we should focus on what really matters here: his career and his success. Please stop including me in this narrative. He deserves this moment,” said Stassney Brown
The former couple married in 2022, according to previous posts by Brown, although it is unclear when the divorce was formalized. What is certain is that, according to her words, Brown seeks to maintain respect and prevent her personal life from interfering with Slater’s professional achievements.
Rashawn Slater breaks records with new contract
Beyond the controversy on social media, what stands out is the sporting and economic impact of Slater’s new contract. With $28.5 million a year, the offensive lineman becomes the highest paid player at his position in NFL history.
Slater himself celebrated the moment on Instagram, sharing a photo while signing the contract surrounded by his family:
Blessed to fulfill a dream with my family by my side. None of this would be possible without these people and many others who have supported me. We’re just getting started!
Why is Rashawn Slater so valuable?
Selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2021 draft, Slater has started all 52 games he has played in. In 2024, his solidity on the line was key to the Chargers’ offense committing just eight turnovers, a franchise record and the second-best mark in NFL history.
With this renewal, the team secures a key player to protect quarterback Justin Herbert and cement the future of the franchise.
