Der große Bruder mischt sich ein!
Spaniens Flügelstar Nico Williams (23) stand in dieser Transferperiode wohl unmittelbar vor einem Wechsel zum FC Barcelona. Doch zur Überraschung vieler verlängerte Williams seinen Vertrag bei Athletic Bilbao Anfang Juli bis 2035 (!). Nun äußerte sich sein Bruder zu den Gerüchten und attackierte den spanischen Meister scharf.

Auf einer Pressekonferenz sagte er, bezogen auf die Wechselgerüchte und das öffentliche Werben um Nico: „Wir alle wissen, wie die Fußballwelt funktioniert. Sie (Barça, Anm. d. Red.) wollten Athletic und meinen Bruder unter Druck setzen, starteten eine Medienkampagne und hofften, dass es funktionieren würde. Ich denke, bei Athletic regeln wir das im Stillen, wenn wir einen Spieler wollen.“
Erst kürzlich äußerte sich Barcelonas Präsident Joan Laporta (63) zum geplatzten Transfer des Europameisters von 2024 und behauptete, dass Nico Williams’ Berater mit dem Wunsch einer Verpflichtung auf die Katalanen zukam. Zudem deutete Laporta schwierige Gespräche mit der Williams-Seite aufgrund von unterschiedlichen finanziellen Vorstellungen an, „die bereits Anzeichen dafür waren, dass der Transfer nicht zustande kommen würde.“

Inaki Williams: „Viele Dinge wurden in den Dreck gezogen“
Die Spekulationen rund um seinen Bruder hätten „eine Menge Schaden“ angerichtet, so Inaki Williams. Der Angreifer, der bereits auf 471 Pflichtspieleinsätze für die Basken kommt, unterstellt dem FC Barcelona, Unwahrheiten verbreitet zu haben: „Viele Dinge wurden in den Dreck gezogen. Und vieles, was sie sagten, was in den Medien oder bei Social Media behauptet wurde, war gelogen.“
Die Entscheidung für den Bilbao-Verbleib von Nico stand wohl schon länger fest, so sein älterer Bruder: „Aber wir mussten noch ein paar Dinge festzurren, um einen derart langen Vertrag abzuschließen und ihn bis 2035 zu binden. Das konnte man nicht einfach mal so von einem Tag auf den anderen verkünden.“
