Die ehemalige deutsche Weltklasse-Biathletin ist bei einem schweren Unglück beim Bergsteigen im Karakorum-Gebirge in Pakistan ums Leben gekommen. Das teilte ihr Management der Deutschen Presse-Agentur mit.
Die zweifache Olympiasiegerin und siebenfache Weltmeisterin war am 28. Juli mit ihrer Seilpartnerin im alpinen Stil unterwegs, als sie auf rund 5700 Metern Höhe von einem Steinschlag getroffen wurde.
In der Mitteilung ihres Managements heißt es: „Am Morgen des 29. Juli konnte Laura Dahlmeier bei einem Überflug eines Militärhubschraubers gesichtet werden, es waren jedoch keine Lebenszeichen wahrnehmbar. Aufgrund technischer und bergetechnischer Limitierungen des Hubschraubers konnte eine Rettung aus der Luft nicht durchgeführt werden. Auch eine terrestrische Rettung war wegen der anhaltenden Steinschlaggefahr und der objektiven Gefahren am Unfallort nicht möglich.“
Und weiter: „Auf Grundlage der Erkenntnisse aus dem Hubschrauber-Überflug und der Schilderungen der Seilpartnerin zur Schwere der Verletzungen, ist vom sofortigen Tod Laura Dahlmeiers auszugehen. Mit Einsetzen der Dunkelheit wurde die Bergung am Abend eingestellt. (…) Die Bergung des Leichnams ist für die Rettungskräfte unter den aktuell vorherrschenden schwierigen Bedingungen mit Steinschlag und einem Wetterumschwung am Laila Peak mit einem zu hohen Risiko verbunden und nicht realisierbar.“
Das Management verweist darauf, dass es „Laura Dahlmeiers ausdrücklicher und niedergeschriebener Wille“ war, dass in einem solchen Fall „niemand sein Leben riskieren darf, um sie zu bergen. Ihr Wunsch war es, ihren Leichnam in diesem Fall am Berg zurückzulassen.“
Laura Dahlmeier war eine der größten Biathletinnen, die Deutschland je hatte. Sie gewann bei den Olympischen Spielen 2018 in Pyeongchang zweimal Gold (Sprint und Verfolgung) und einmal Bronze.
Schon ein Jahr zuvor hatte sie in Hochfilzen Biathlon-Geschichte geschrieben: Fünf Weltmeistertitel bei einer einzigen WM – das hatte vor ihr keine Frau geschafft.
In der Saison 2016/17 gewann sie den Gesamtweltcup und dominierte den Sport wie kaum eine andere.
Trotz der Erfolge war Dahlmeier immer bodenständig. Sie suchte nie den großen Auftritt, sondern ließ lieber ihre herausragenden Leistungen für sich sprechen.
2019, mit nur 25 Jahren, beendete sie überraschend ihre Karriere. Dahlmeier sprach offen über mentale und körperliche Erschöpfung. Danach widmete sie sich neuen Herausforderungen – und fand ihren Weg in die Berge zurück.
Dahlmeier ließ sich 2,5 Jahre zur staatlich geprüften Berg- und Skiführerin ausbilden, eine der anspruchsvollsten Ausbildungen im Alpinismus. Daneben engagierte sie sich als Buchautorin, ZDF-Expertin und Naturschützerin.
In Interviews sprach sie oft über die „Demut in den Bergen“ und warnte vor Selbstüberschätzung: „Wer in die Höhe geht, muss wissen, dass er auch nicht zurückkommen kann.“
